VOTE HERE For Your Next MavsMoneyball Blogger(s)!

A toast... to the fellas who gave it their all! (Photo by Ralph Orlowski/Bongarts/Getty Images)

Happy weekend, y'all. We've had a fun-filled week full of fresh new perspectives on the Dallas Mavericks, and the time has come to re-read all five submissions and vote on which author you'd like to see join our ranks. I mentioned before we might take more than one if the community demands it. The more, the merrier, right? Below you'll find all five articles in the order they were presented. Please consider this carefully! You only get one vote, so make it count. This poll will be left up through Sunday night, at which time I will declare the victor(s).

Well

I just want to say that the competition was fantastic…and was actually surprised at the quality that everyone put out there…So where have you guys been? I hope that this will spark a wave of posters not seen here on MMB, where we are all entertained and informed as we have been this past week…Good luck to everyone….

Here’s a theoretical play from last year: Snap. Tony takes 7 step drop. Tony looks left at Miles, who is doubled, and looks right to where Roy Williams should be…but instead sees Colombo on his back and a Defensive End foaming at the mouth jumping over Marc’s carcass. Tony proceeds to run like hell and look for Witten

Gotta say...

…no matter what happens, MMB is gonna get a great writer added to the site. It was an honor being able to share my words with yall. Thanks again for being real cool (whether you thought I was a dummy or not! Haha).

And of course a future congrats to whoever wins!

Yeah, this is odd.

By the way most polls go, the general vote distribution is pretty quickly established, but it’s swung dramatically over the course of a few hours.

I don't know of anyway to prove or disprove this.

A quick look at some of the editorial tools SBNation provides shows that the page of the Poll has been getting slightly more direct traffic visits than referrals (links from Facebook, Yahoo, and the like), and I suppose if someone was proxying they’d be doing so directly. However, it was such a slight difference that it seems very unlikely. It was well in line with what this site normally sees.

This is by no means a normal poll, either, because an educated voter will have to read five different articles before placing his vote.

For the record

i was just asking an honest question.

by Jim America on Jul 24, 2011 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm always open to a good conspiracy theory.

Work me through this one, though, just for the heck of it. The obvious answer is the candidates are voting for themselves, but I know all of them on a basic level and that would very much surprise me. So that means that there’s a MMB reader that cares so much about the site that he would proxy and vote many times to get his favorite in the lead? And then, because of these new votes, there’s another reader just like that whose doing the same? That’d be quite some devotion to a unpaid sports blog writer candidate who’ve they likely only seen write once (their audition article).

Just trying to see how realistic of a theory this is. As the editor here, certainly any concerns about cheating in something as important to the site as this I take seriously, and this is no different. Certainly there are some things which are seeming somewhat suspicious. However, I just don’t see it being likely enough to scrap this and consider a new system of decision. Not yet, anyhow.

by Tim Cato on Jul 24, 2011 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

haha yeah I don't know.

I just think that this is how the poll goes, sometimes. I know I shifted my opinion several times, so perhaps people who took their time to vote like I did (voted about 15 minutes ago, tbh) may have had an overwhelming opinion towards a different person than those who voted immediately.

As for the soccer, I’ll leave it to you haha. I appreciate the skill and athletic condition that it takes to play such a sport, but watching it I find just mind-numbing. I think that’s why I love basketball so much…it’s arguably the fastest paced major sport in the world, really.

by Tim Cato on Jul 24, 2011 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

the real football or soccer is actually pretty good played by superstars

theres good passes good defence goalkeepers finesse power played properly it could be exciting, sometimes last second goals
change the outcome, but ya i would’t watch mls for example

fyi

Mr. Boweman has his own Twitter campaign going, and has lots of friends tweeting for him. I doubt there was any hacking, and I trust tcat’s analysis.

Okay, that makes sense.

Just hope that his friends actually read this stuff then…

Because otherwise I’d be annoyed.

Just for the record

I posted on my Twitter and Facebook to check out it out and my friends did whatever they did on their own, promoting the site and the vote and whatnot. I’m honestly floored at the support my friends gave me. All of them told me they read the site and also read all the submissions posts as well. Or at least that’s what they told me

I loved all the writers who competed, and I hope I didn’t offend anyone…I really didn’t ask for any help at all. I just wanted to entertain you guys! All the writers here deserve it. I was happy just to be apart of the process.

by Boweman55 on Jul 24, 2011 11:54 PM CDT reply actions

As a person who has no impact on the various decision making on this site, I think it's okay

if people who did provide your voting support actually read what the site produces. I think at the start of the process, Lisa very much stressed the importance of the community (with that meaning not just commenters, but MMB readers in general) being able to make the decision which was satisfactory to them. It would have been a very dissatisfying result if there actually was a case of random acquaintances who don’t care at all about what is produced from this site popping in just once to vote.

If the poll results are official, congrats on winning the thing. I’m looking forward to your posts.

Wow!

First of all, I’m honored. I can’t remember the last time I had over 100 people vote for me for anything, except in that one wet t-shirt contest in Tijuana, and frankly that’s pretty fuzzy.

Second of all, I TOTALLY posted this stuff on facebook and I’m certain that accounts for a good number of my votes. Some of my friends have even been so kind as to post it on their own facebook walls, unsolicited, and that warms my herat. I’m sure that no one was accusing anyone of having friends spam the poll because their favorite wasn’t winning, but just because the numbers HAVE changed dramatically back and forth a couple of times.

So, though I’m skipping along in third, so it may not be all that important, just wanted to lay my own cards on the table. If trying to get your friends to come vote for you is unethical, then I have been unethical. Other than that, best wishes to all of Mavs Nation, and to all a good night (or mid-morning, whatevs)

by andytobo on Jul 25, 2011 6:15 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think it's unethical

for that matter it shows you guys want the gig, which probably means you’ll be committed to it if you get it. As long as the people voting stick around, then it brings in readers and/or engages a segment of members anyway.

I really was just wondering how many members there were. Story of my life…accidentally starting an uprising everywhere I go.

by Jim America on Jul 25, 2011 7:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Jim, or should I say Mr. America, I didn’t want to call you out at all! I’m sure the possible implication of your comment, drawn out by others, is 100 percent accurate, that the dramatic skipping around of the vote had a lot to do with some hardcore social networking. Just wanted to come clean on my own part of these particular misdeeds, if it was an issue. And, of course, in terms of uprising, this comment thread is about 90 misspelled swear words about Obama short of even a typical internet comment thread….

by andytobo on Jul 25, 2011 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Ha...unfortunately, very true

oddly enough, I asked about the # of readers, because I’ve worked in federal politics/policy and was thinking about voter turnout. The voter fraud aspect really hadn’t crossed my mind.

And I didn’t think you were calling me or anybody else out…just slowly backing away from a very mild tinfoil hat gathering.
