As interesting as this free agency period has been, I think its been good for us as fans. Your feelings for the past two-ish weeks aside, we have been spoiled with our Mavs... Have we suffered through heartbreaking losses? Yes. Have our Mavs missed out on golden opportunities, to our dismay? Yes. Have we had to watch hated rivals parade around with the championship trophy seemingly every year? That's for damn sure! But you know what? Our team has been considered one of the best in the league for a long time, and on top of that, we got to experience the sweet taste of ultimate victory. Not many fan bases get to enjoy the kind of consistent success we have had during the 21st century, and we needed last week to serve as a dose of reality.
Look at teams like the Kings and the Warriors: They have had to deal with awful teams, bad transactions, and questionable-to-terrible ownership for YEARS and yet their fans still stick by their team. Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson have one bad week, and all of a sudden people are jumping off the proverbial bandwagon left and right! Chants of TRADE DIRK and FIRE NELSON and CUBAN SUCKS could and can still be seen everywhere, and, I must admit, I had second thoughts about the sanity of our front office. Are they perfect? For goodness sake, no! They leave a bit to be desired in the drafting department, but still, they make up for it by making do with whats available. They have successfully done so in the past, and this year's team will be no different. We didn't get D-Will, but we did get Chris Kaman on a friendly one year deal, Elton Brand for very little, and one potentially important contributor in Dahntay Jones and one likely impact starter in Darren Collison- for a free agent! This team can potentially be light years ahead of last years, and Cubes and Donnie managed to do so while maintaining financial flexibility for next year's free agency class. BIG-time kudos to them.
On a more personal note, this will be my first full season as a member of Mavs Moneyball, and, quite frankly, I can't wait for it to start! I know most of you can't wait either (shame on you if you don't!), and I wish you all a fun-filled summer.
