Four Pointer: Previewing the Washington Wizards

USA TODAY Sports

The hot-shooting Washington Wizards roll into town to face the Dallas Mavericks.

What did the Wizards do over the summer?

The Wizards were mostly quiet for the majority of the summer. They drafted Otto Porter Jr. but unfortunately haven't seen him take the floor due to injury. Just before the season began, Washington made a trade to acquire Marcin Gortat from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Emeka Okafor and a draft pick.

Which team stat might determine the game?

3-point field goals. The Wizards are one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league. Dallas is no slouch in this category either. Whoever can prevent the other team from getting open looks from the perimeter will gain the upper hand.

What's the biggest matchup to watch?

The backcourts. Washington has the young duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal. These players can score at will and Wall has the ability to break down defenses with his passing and ability to get to the rim. Jose Calderon and Monta Ellis will be tasked with trying to slow Wall and Beal down. Of course, Calderon and Ellis are to be respected in their own right as each will be looking to set up teammates and for their own shots.

What do the Mavs need to do to be successful against the Wizards?

Dallas needs to limit Washington's 3-point shooting opportunities and prevent Wall's dribble penetration. If they can do that, the Mavs stand a good chance at slowing down the high-scoring Wizards. The Mavericks also need to win the battle of the glass. Despite the presence of Gortat and Nene, Washinton is not a sound rebounding club. Dallas needs to control the glass and limit the scoring opportunities of the Wizards.
