Four-Pointer: Previewing Dallas Mavericks-Atlanta Hawks

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Hawks are looking to even the season series after the Mavericks took care of business in the first game of the year.

What has Atlanta done lately?

The Hawks are sitting at an even 8-8, which would tie them for the 11th seed in the Western Conference. Instead, they're tied for third in the East and have a 1-4 record against teams from the West. Talk about a disparity in talent between these two sides.

What is Atlanta's biggest strengths and weaknesses?

Atlanta has a middle-of-the-pack defense, but the offense isn't too scary and the offensive rebounding is second-worst in the league. In other words, they aren't good in areas that the Mavericks usually struggle at. Now, what the Hawks do have is a scary front court with Al Horford and Paul Millsap. The SamDal Blair combo is going to have its hands full once again trying to keep up with those two.

What team stat might determine the game?

I'll say points in transition -- if it's about even, the Mavericks probably haven't done enough to outscore the Hawks. We've all seen how incredibly dangerous this team becomes when its flying down the court every few possessions. If that Dallas offense gets cranked up, then the Hawks probably won't have much luck better them in a shootout.

What Atlanta player might be due for a big game?

My bro Kyle Korver has a chance to tie Dana Barros for the most consecutive games hitting a three pointer if he nails one tonight and extends it to 89 straight. Correction: we're not really bros because I've never actually met him, but as a white guy who likes to think he can shoot, I feel a slight connection to him.
