O.J. Mayo getting MRI on left shoulder

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

O.J. Mayo injured his left shoulder late in Tuesday's win against the Clippers. He played on Thursday night against the Pacers but the Mavericks are making sure the injury isn't too serious.

O.J. Mayo didn't look good in Thursday's loss to the Pacers last night. Mayo shot 3 of 10 from the floor, 1 of 5 from three and scored just seven points in the blowout loss.

He injured his shoulder on a scary fall to the floor late in the Mavs OT-win against the Clippers on Tuesday. Mayo finished the game and played on Thursday with a harness on the shoulder. According to reports he participated in non-contact practice on Friday.

Now the Mavs are making sure this isn't a more serious injury and he's getting an MRI today. From Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com:

"He's sore," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's been one of our soldiers. He's played hurt all year long. He took a pretty good hit on it in the Clipper game late and it's bothering him, so we're going to get it looked at and make sure it's something that isn't a serious injury.

"The hope is that it's not and he can continue to play, but we'll see."

Mayo ranks second on the Mavs in scoring (16.3 points per game), second in assists (4.4) and leads the team in minutes (35.7).

The 25-year-old Mayo has missed only one game due to injury or illness during his five-year career. His toughness is one of the traits the Mavs like most about the fifth-year veteran, who can test free agency again this summer if he decides not to exercise the player option in his contract for next season.

Hopefully Mayo is OK. The Mavericks can ill-afford an injury to their second-leading scorer as they try to grab the eighth seed of the playoffs. Mayo didn't look good on Thursday and maybe that was the shoulder or maybe it was his normal streaky self. At least the Mavs are getting it checked out.
