The Worst Game I Ever Watched

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Revisit a game lost to time in a season where Dallas made history

April of 2006 was one of those blurry months for me, upon reflection. I had finals for college, graduated, went to my engagement party, drove across the country and found a job in Washington DC. Specific moments are all wrapped up in this whirl wind of life changing events.

But one moment, or rather one game, stands out in my mind seven years later. It's a game I'll never forget. But first, a little more back story. While I was in school at Pepperdine, I wasn't able to see a ton of Maverick games. I lived on campus and I don't even remember if League Pass was a thing then, but I was probably too cheap to purchase it. As a result, I had to live on box scores, nationally televised games, and locally televised games whenever a Los Angeles team would play the Mavericks.

Which brings us back to April 19th, 2006. It was the final game of the regular season, against the Clippers, which meant I'd get to see the Clippers broadcast on local TV. My wife (then fiancee) and I would always try to find a place on campus where we could watch the game without anyone else complaining. I remember the line up announcements clearly; it had not occurred to me that since it was the season finale and playoff position was already established (Dallas would be a 4 seed and the Clippers would be a 6 seed), the stars would get rest. Take look at these line ups and rosters:

To say that I remember every detail of this game would be a lie. In fact, I remember very little about the actual game itself. I know that it happened and I know that I will never forget this. I remember my wife asking if we actually had to watch that mess of a game. I also know that at one point Dallas featured a line up boasting Rawle Marshal at point guard, Josh Powell at shooting guard, DJ Mbenga at small forward, DeSagana Diop at power forward, and that legendary 7'6" behemoth Pavel Podkolzin. It was breathtakingly bad basketball.

There are some real nuggets in this box score once you comb through it. For the Clippers, Boniface N'Dong PLAYED IN A REAL GAME. He only played in 23 games his entire career, so in a way I was watching history. Vin Baker also played and was pretty effective. By this point in my life, Vin Baker feels more like a myth than an actual player.

For Dallas we see that Josh Powell hit 2 of 12. Rawle Marshall shot 17 times, which finished as his career high (he took 9 shots once with the Pacers the next season). Diop had 7 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocks. He also hit a three pointer.

DID YOU READ THAT, EVERYONE? DESAGNA DIOP TOOK AND HIT A THREE POINTER. IN A GAME. THAT I SAW. IT WAS A DESIGNED PLAY. A DESIGNED PLAY I SAY! Sadly, no video is available of this momentous event.

I wasn't around for much of the mid 90's disaster seasons, so this game on the eve of our second favorite playoff run of all time takes the cake for me as far as worst games ever. What about you all? Some of you have been Mavs fans for longer than some of our writers have been alive. What's the worst game you've ever seen from the Mavericks?
