You're Donnie Nelson, and free agency is now open. What realistic moves do you make?
1.) Trade Vince Carter for our own protected draft pick, so we can start trading those again. Correct me if I'm wrong - I think OKC owns the pick and it's a 20-30 pick only. I'm sure they could use Carter for a year to help on a championship run, especially if they lose Kevin Martin.
2.) Trade Shawn Marion for some non-guaranteed contracts: http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/02/201314-non-guaranteed-contracts.html - who it is doesn't really matter as they will be immediately waived to clear cap space. Whichever team wants him for their rubbish.
3.) Before meeting with Dwight Howard, put together a three way trade with the Clippers and Boston. The Clippers get O.J. Mayo and Shane Larkin, the Mavericks get Rajon Rondo and a bad Clippers contract like Caron Butler's and the Celtics get Eric Bledsoe, a signed-and-traded Brandan Wright and two first round draft picks. This deal works out for all three teams. Alternately, just sign-and-trade Mayo and a pick/asset for Bledsoe and a bad contract if Boston won't play ball.
5.) Fill in the rest of the spots with value plays like and veterans taking discounts to play on a contender.
Roster 1 - Rondo - Anthony Morrow (or other FA SG) - Butler - Dirk - Dwight
Roster 2 - Bledsoe - Iggy - Butler - Dirk - Splitter
