Greg Smith has been waived by the Houston Rockets and while he certainly wouldn't alter the fate of the Mavericks' hopeful post-season since he will most likely sit it out, he is a 23yo big man that has shown he can compete in the league. The only reason to claim him would be to retain his Bird rights which as a young player on a minimum contract could prove very useful even as a trade piece. He has to get past the dregs of the league for the Mavs to have a shot at him but because he is a minimum salary player, they can claim him off waivers despite being over the cap.
While he isn't really a household name, he was a solid rotation player for Houston last year and he has put up 14 and 10 per 36 for the last two seasons. He has a 7'3'' wingspan and huge hands which help make him a plus defender and a good rebounder. He also shoots a high percentage (62% career) as all of his shots come at the rim on dunks or offensive rebound putbacks.
Would yall be willing to give up Sarge or Mekel to open up a roster spot for the young big man?
