Another game, another passed milestone for Dirk Nowitzki.
Dirk passed Moses Malone in overtime on Monday against the Nets to become the no. 7 all time NBA scorer. After tying Malone early in the fourth quarter on a 3-point play, Dirk and the Mavericks struggled to close out Brooklyn. Dirk himself missed a couple shots that he could have passed Malone on, but with less than a minute left in the game the ball rotated back to him above the 3-point line and he didn't hesitate. The 3-point shot looked just like it has for 16 years. Swish.
Now with 27,410 points and counting, Dirk will sit tight at no. 7 for the rest of the year. Shaquille O'Neal is next on the all-time list with 28,598 points and Dirk would have to average more than 25 points a game for the rest of the year to reach that, which won't happen. If Dirk continues his 18 points per game pace, he'd surpass Shaq about 20 games into the 2015-16 season.
Regardless of where he ends up, we are just lucky to have watched a player with a career as amazing as Dirk's. To think that there are only SIX players in the entire history of the NBA with more points than him is just incredible.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
