As our own Alan Smithee noted a couple weeks ago, the Mavericks have indeed taken their search for some center depth overseas, and signed one of the guys Alan mentioned to a deal.
Earlier today, the team announced that they have signed 29 year old, 7'1 center Salah Mejri from Tunisia. Mejri will be the first Tunisian player in the NBA, as the Mavs continue their trend of trailblazing that started with drafting Satnam Singh (who would be the first Indian player in the NBA). Mejri most recently played for Real Madrid in the Spanish ACB league. He also played with the Utah Jazz as part of their 2012 Summer League squad.
As Tim MacMahon reported, Mejri will come to the Mavs on a three-year, partially guaranteed deal. This is similar to several deals the Mavs have structured this off-season as they continue to try and find the right mix of depth and talent for their bench this coming season.
Like other of these recent deals, I would expect that the final roster spots will be incredibly fluid as training camp approaches, and now Mejri will have a shot at one of those spots.
