Very Good Scenarios for the Mavs Free Agency

Disclaimer: these scenarios are unlikely, not impossible, just unlikely. Also, it’s sort of for fun, so don’t get too bogged down in the details.

If the cap is at $92 million, the Mavs will have about $48 million to play with, and Parsons’ cap hold is factored into that.

Step 1: Resign Parsons to a max deal: 4 years/90 mil, but don’t actually sign the contract until everyone else has been signed so the Mavs have about $3 mil extra to play with.

Step 2: DeMar DeRozan goes to the LA Lakers, making Jordan Clarkson expendable and the Raptors without a SG

Step 3: Trade Wes Matthews and Devin Harris to the Raptors for Delon Wright and a 2nd round pick. This takes the Mavs salary cap down from $48 mil to $27 mil.

Step 4: Sign Jordan Clarkson to a 4 year/80 mil deal that the Lakers don’t match. This takes the Mavs salary cap to around $47 mil.

Step 5: Sign Bradley Beal to a 4 year/90 mil deal that the Wizards don’t match. This takes the Mavs salary cap to around $69 mil. At this point, the players on the roster signed are Jordan Clarkson, Bradley Beal, JJ Barea, Justin Anderson, Chandler Parsons, Javale McGee, and Salah Mejri.

Step 6: The Mavs still have $23 mil to play with. Resign Dirk for $10 mil. Resign Powell for $3 mil. Sign Mbah a Moute for $5 mil. Sign Garrett Temple for $5 mil.

Step 7: Profit. Depth Chart would be:

Jordan Clarkson/JJ Barea/Delon Wright

Bradley Beal/Garrett Temple/Delon Wright

Justin Anderson/Luc Mbah a Moute/Garrett Temple

Chandler Parsons/Dirk/Dwight Powell

Salah Mejri/Dwight Powell/JaVale McGee

Slightly Worse but more Realistic Scenario

Step 1: Resign Parsons to a max deal: 4 years/90 mil, but don’t actually sign the contract until everyone else has been signed so the Mavs have about $3 mil extra to play with.

Step 2: Sign and trade Wes Matthews to the Wizards for Bradley Beal for a 4 year/90 mil deal.

Step 3: Trade Devin Harris to someone. These moves would put the Mavs at $49 mil.

Step 4: Sign Jordan Clarkson to a 4 year/90 mil deal. This would put the Mavs at $71 mil. If DeRozan goes to the Lakers, it’s more likely the Lakers will not match a smaller deal; however, that is not part of this scenario, so I gave him a max deal here.

Step 5: The Mavs still have about $21 mil to play with. Resign Dirk for $10 mil. Resign Powell for $3 mil. Sign Seth Curry for $5 mil. Use 2nd round pick on SF or do some trades with draft picks or something to get a backup SF. You could potentially trade a 1st and 2 2nds to Toronto for Delon Wright and then not have to sign Seth Curry, and then use that money on SFs.

Step 6: Profit. Depth Chart would be:

Jordan Clarkson/JJ Barea/Seth Curry

Bradley Beal/Seth Curry

Chandler Parsons/Justin Anderson/$3 mil guy or 2nd round pick/Jeremy Evans

Dirk/Parsons/Dwight Powell/$3 mil guy

Salah Mejri/Dwight Powell/JaVale McGee

Now you may be wondering, is this really an upgrade, I would answer to that, of course. First off, Chandler Parsons is set to be healthy to start the season so that’s good, and hopefully he can stay healthy. If that happens, we will immediately be a little better. Second, Mejri is better than Zaza so that’s an upgrade. Third, Seth Curry is a great player off the bench. Fourth, Justin Anderson is going to get better this offseason.

Fifth, Clarkson and Beal are both under 25 and it would be a very promising backcourt, and at the very least, those are both very tradeable players, so you could always part with them like that. Sixth, Dwight Powell will get better. Seventh, JaVale McGee will get better. Ninth, Bradley Beal is a very good offensive player and a better shooter than Wes Matthews. His defense isn’t up there with Wes’ but he has shown good defensive flashes in the past. Tenth, Clarkson is a very good PnR player and running a Dirk PnR with Parsons and Beal on the wings and a player as athletic as Clarkson is salivating. Eleventh, it’d be way younger.

I would worry about the backups for the 3 and 4 but hopefully a $3 mil guy could alleviate that issue. I have Luc Mbah a Moute in mind but I don’t know if he’d be that cheap. Anyways, this would be pretty beast and not that unlikely, so I’m interested to hear what ya’ll think of it.
