The "old Josh"

I was sifting through my library of videos (movies, basketball and baseball games, Youtube clips and basketball mixes, etc.), and I stumbled upon a Josh Howard mix. I searched for the original link on Youtube...

Of course, we all know how Josh used to play when the plays weren't run for him. But this is a living reminder: I think I saw one jumpshot in that: the rest were in the paint, driving, putting down a nasty slam. There were several instances where he took on a defender one-on-one with his handles, then drove to the rim and scored. What would he have most likely done nowadays? Pull up for a fadeaway.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

My stance towards trading Josh has lowered a little though: somebody just needs to tell him to either shoot a thousand of those types of jumpers a day over the off-season, or to mix the two together and he should be back next season even better.

Carlisle, Mavs agree to term

from dmn blog, posted by Dan Galvis (?):

"Rick Carlisle and the Mavericks have agreed in principle to a four-year deal, according to a source."

glad to get this over with. now let's see some players movement. personally i'd like to see dirk, kidd, bass, and lue stay, and terry and damp also, unless they can be exchanged with a star in their position. i hope josh gets his head right, but I won't feel bad if mavs trade him.

p.s., if dmn blog allows an 18-word entry, shouldn't mavsmoneyball relax its 75-word requirement?

From the keyboard of Mark Cuban

This may be old news for those of you who regularly frequent Cuban's blog, but for those who don't, here are some excerpts that I thought were interesting.

Hornets or Spurs?

As a basketball fan, who are you "rooting" for?  To me, the wound from NO is still too fresh, but how could I ever want San Antone to win?  I guess because we won that magical seven game series against them once upon a time and they seem beatable.  Plus, everyone has fallen in love with Chris Paul, so you kinda gotta like to see him lose and suffer after the devastation he caused to Dallas.  And isn't everyone else wishing that Boston will "choke" so they can claim the title of biggest first round upset in NBA history?  Just wondering how other MFFLs look at the remaining series...

Vescey says Mavs have hired Carlisle.

Now, I think this quite shaky, considering the source, but Peter Vescey is reporting that the Mavs have hired Carlisle.

One newspaper has already picked up on the report.

Link

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Rick Carlisle is reportedly headed back to the NBA as a head coach.

Analyst Peter Vecsey, speaking on NBA TV, reported Carlisle would take over for the recently fired Avery Johnson.

In six seasons as a coach, two with Detroit and four with Indiana, Carlisle has compiled a 281-211 record. He was the league's coach of the year in 2002 when he guided the Pistons to a 50-win season.

Avery is gone.

Per ESPN.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3375306

The Dallas Mavericks parted company with coach Avery Johnson on Wednesday, a day following the team's first-round exit from the NBA playoffs, ESPN.com has learned.

Speculation about Johnson's future with the franchise had been mounting for weeks, ever since Dallas struggled to reach the playoffs as the seventh seed following its midseason acquisition of point guard Jason Kidd from New Jersey.

Johnson became Mavs coach during the 2004-05 season and walks away with a 194-70 record (.735) but only a 23-24 mark in the playoffs. Host New Orleans wrapped up a 4-1 series rout of Dallas with Tuesday night's 99-94 victory.

"This is tough for me," Johnson said after the game, not specifically responding to a question about his job security but struggling to contain his disappointment after the Mavs' second straight flameout in the first round.

NBA front-office offices sources told ESPN.com that both the Mavs and Johnson, feeling that a coaching change was inevitable, wanted to come to a resolution quickly so Dallas could begin interviewing candidates and Johnson could pursue another job.

Sources close to the situation have said that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban actually considered firing Johnson before the playoffs, specifically after Cuban and Johnson engaged in an emotional argument after a March 18 home loss to the Lakers.

Cuban refused to speak with reporters after Tuesday's loss -- Dallas' ninth playoff defeat in a row on the road since taking a 2-0 lead in the 2006 NBA Finals.
