Chris Webber Is Staying In America

Chris Webber has turned down a 12 million dollar offer from Olympiacos, stating that he's an "NBA guy".

I don't want to want Chris Webber on the Mavs, but I think I do. The idea of having Dirk, Diop, Fazekas, Bass, and George as the only healthy options at PF and C for as long as 25 games scares the hell out of me.

It might not matter though, because Webber is saying he'll only come back for the Pistons.

"I'm not going to Greece," Webber said. "It's no disrespect to [Olympiacos], but I can't do that. I'm an NBA guy. I don't want to just chase money. I want to make sure I respect the game.

"To tell you the truth, it's kind of stupid in a way to turn down stupid money, as my dad would call it, but I can't just do it for the money. If I'm going to play, I'm only going to play as a Piston ... unless something crazy happens."
My guess is something crazy happens. I really don't get the impression that Webber is willing to retire, and it doesn't sound like Detroit is a realistic possibilty.

Webber will most likely try to stay in shape and latch on to a team mid-season, but by that point Dampier will be back and the Mavs need will have shrunk just a little bit.

The Mavericks HAVE to get Chris Webber...
I don't like the guy at all, but going into the season with Fazekas and Bass as Dirk's primary backups is terrible. Webber can still score a little bit, he's still a GREAT distributor from the blocks...Detroit doesn't have any room for him. Cuban just needs to give this guy one year at the MLE and move on.

PLEASE....
sign him... I have been preaching this for awhile... we NEED him, if we are willing to take on van horn and cro contracts, why not pay webber!??!!  Def an upgrade.  I couldnt agree more that I dislike him, but we do NEED him.  He to me would fit in far better than pj would or anyone else who might still be available out there, just because I think he can create for our offense with his passing skills and his semi decent shot.  Can you imagine what he would've done for us against GS last year??  A big body, who they would have to have guarded because he can be an offensive threat, and he would've opened the floor up for dirk.  Again, as long as he takes on a stack type roll and doesnt volume shoot "walker" his way into games, he will be AWESOME for us!

What about...
Anderson Varejao? I know he's not really a real scoring option, but wouldn't it be nice to have a guy we can turn to behind Dirk to come in and do some dirty work? AV plays defense and rebounds with great energy, he's younger than Webber, and seems like he'd be a good fit with Avery...Obviously Cleveland would have a chance to match, but why not go make the kid a legit offer, and force Cleveland to make a tough decision? I tell you this much, I'd rather have AV guarding Duncan, Amare, whoever than I would Dirk, Damp, Diop or George...

Sideshow Andy
The most we could offer would be the mid level, and the Cavs would match that in a nanosecond.

The only way we'd have a shot at him would be sign and trade.

I'd trade Terry for him straight up, but I don't see that happening.

The NBA is rigged. I've been telling you it is, and now the FBI backs me up. If you don't believe the truth by now, you've got brain problems.

Webber
I'd love to have him here. From a basketball standpoint I think he'd be a great fit. But moves like this shouldn't be made from a basketball prospective. They should be made from a marketablity standpoint. Webber's not exactly a marketable star, but I'd be willing to bet that way more people in America know who Chris Webber is than know who Dirk Nowitzki is.

Since we can't get a marketable star here, maybe if we get enough household names on this team Stern will let us win a title.

Wilder things have happened, right?
