BOOM!

Kobe wants out of LA.

"I would like to be traded, yeah," Bryant said on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York. "Tough as it is to come to that conclusion there's no other alternative, you know?"

Bryant, interviewed by Stephen A. Smith, was asked if there was anything the Lakers could do to change his mind.

"No," Bryant said. "I just want them to do the right thing."
PREDICTION: Nothing Happens.

Just to get my two cents out there since I didn't even bother yesterday. I would LOVE to see Kobe play for the Mavs as long as he's playing with Dirk. Trading Dirk for Kobe doesn't make this team better. It's not because I think Dirk is way better than Kobe or anything, but put Kobe on this team without Dirk or a center who can score and we've just become the Lakers of the last two seasons. No thanks.

Get a deal centered around Josh Howard and Devin Harris and I'm in, but quite a few teams could top any of the Mavs potential offers. Not to mention, that if he were traded, it would almost certainly be outside the Conference.

Make this the imaginary Kobe to Dallas trade idea open thread. (Trade Checker)

Basketball is a team sport
What made Kobe great back in the day was that he had a supporting cast of capable teammates. This has changed drastically for the Lakers because now they only have Kobe, and, Kobe has gotten pretty used to playing by himself out there. If Dirk and Kobe traded places it would be a bad move for both organizations. Dirk is not a player who is going to take over a game and drop 50 points. Kobe is not a player who plays well with teammates because he needs the ball all the time. He functioned well with Shaq because Shaq doesn't need anybody's help to create offense as he can just back his way to the hoop.

I think if Kobe got traded anywhere that he would probably end up in the same boat he's in now due to the fact that any team willing to give up players for Kobe would be completely devoid of any talent - kind of like the 06-07 Lakers.

I would do
Howard + Harris + Damp + Buckner for Kobe.

It doesn't work on the trade checker but I can't figure why.  The numbers add up OK by my calculations.

I'm pretty sure LA would try to trade to the East and I'm pretty sure they won't be able to get a good deal with young players for him.

Are you factoring
in that Josh is a poison pill player?  That might be what is messing up your calcs.

No
I'm not familiar with Josh's poison pill in his contract.  Also, I am very confused about why Harris is worth more salary in this calculation than Josh.

Care to help enlighten me?

Why does ...
Kobe for Dirk straight up fail at Realgm's trade checker?  It looks like the salaries are close enough to me.  The ESPN trade-checker allows the trade.  What's the deal with Realgm?

by shroom on May 30, 2007 5:14 PM CDT   0 recs

No Trade Clause
Kobe has a no trade clause on his contract and that's what makes any trade involving Kobe fail @ Realgm. All this real-life trading speculation hinges on the fact that Kobe would have to request and/or approve a trade involving him.

by charlesbronsonpinchot on May 31, 2007 10:48 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, but ...
Realgm allows you to propose that Kobe approves the trade by clicking 'continue' and the trade is STILL rejected by the "25%" rule - when the salaries don't look [to me anyway] like they fall foul of the rulebook.  Odd.

Simmons
The Sports Guy (Subscription Required) whipped out a column on potential Kobe trades.  Here is the one for Dallas.

Deal No. 4: Dallas trades Josh Howard, Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse (sign-and-trade starting at $7.3 million per) for Kobe.

Comments: I'm intrigued by this one because (A) the Lakers would be competitive with a Howard-Terry-Odom-Bynum nucleus; (B) Kobe would solve all of Nowitzki's toughness/crunch-time problems; and (C) Dallas could probably win a title with Kobe, Nowitzki, the Diop/Dampier combo, Devin Harris and seven guys they found on the street. But would the Lakers ever trade Kobe to a Western contender? And would Cuban ever admit that Dirk was irrevocably damaged by the 2006 Finals and the Warriors-Mavs series, to the degree that he needed to acquire another crunch-time guy? If the Mavs didn't have the testicular fortitude to pull off a Shaq trade three years ago, they won't have the gulliones to go after Kobe.
