Out of Nowhere! Devin Harris and Dallas Agree to 5 Year Extension

I really did not see this coming.

The five-year extension, which begins after this season, locks Harris up through 2012-13. Harris has played in a key role in the Mavericks reaching the 2005 NBA Finals and finishing with the NBA's best record last season.

"Devin is a vital part of our core and has played a key role in our success," Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. "We are excited about his future in a Mavericks uniform."
Mavericks coach Avery Johnson has referred to Harris as his starting point guard and Harris is approaching the season with the same expectation. That doesn't mean Harris is taking starting for granted.

"Nothing is given," Harris said. "You have to come into camp ready to work hard. I don't want anything to be given to me. I have that mindset and hopefully this will be the year for me."

Harris is no stranger to the first team, having started 61 times last year. "I want that full 82," he said.
Obviously great news (unless the contract is crazy)! More later, discuss...

Doesn't
this make it certain that Terry is coming off the bench this year as the back up point and super scorer?

by jshcmp on Sep 12, 2007 3:40 PM CDT   0 recs

That would be my thought
Or it makes it certain that Terry won't be around much longer, one way or another...

Half true
It makes it certain he'll come off the bench (which is FREAKING AWESOME news for this team), but he won't be a "super scorer", cause Jason Terry will never be super at anything. Except maybe sucking at basketball, cause he super sucks at basketball.
The NBA is rigged. I've been telling you it is, and now the FBI backs me up. If you don't believe the truth by now, you've got brain problems.

Should have
put "Super Scorer" in quotes to better display my sarcasm in my original post.

if you think terry will be coming off the bench
then who are you saying is going to start at 2 this year? ager? e.j.?

Either would be fine
Having Ager out there with Harris and Howard would give us a good young backcourt full of premium athletes... but we'd be kind of light on three point  marksmen with those three.

If EJ can still defend (which has to be a question at this point in his career), then he might be the shooter and veteran presence we need out there.

Who knows.

The only thing I know is that this team will be better if Jason Terry watches the majority of each game from the bench next year.

Hopefully
his contract will have a clause in it that removes David Stern from his post as commisioner of the league, thereby ending all the rigging.

But in all seriousness this is a great basketball move. Devin has been our second best player for a while now, and hopefully he'll actually be utilized by Awful Avery Johnson this coming season.

Second best?
I say third best at best...

Dirk and Howard are before anyone no doubt...

Dirk, yes.
Howard... no. Not in my opinion, anyway.

Howard is a great ancillary player, but he has trouble creating his own shot because he doesn't have a go-to offensive move. He can disappear completely if defended right.

If Harris were properly deployed (something that hasn't happened yet due to the awfulness of Avery Johnson's brain) he'd be better than Howard.

Harris better than Josh?
You're out of your damn mind...

I think
you can make a case that Harris is better due to age and potential at this point in his career compared with Howard.  Remember J-Ho was a 23 yr old rookie.  Harris is 24 and entering his 4th year in the league.

This may be a stupid question
But why was this move surprising?  I expected Devin to be re-signed, but perhaps that's just ignorance on my part.

by Marie on Sep 12, 2007 10:16 PM CDT   0 recs

I think the surprise
stems from the fact that there was no advance warning this move was in the works. Usually you see a lot of "he's negotiating with the team" articles and hear some quotes from the agent and the GM in these types of situations.

This deal seemed to just kind of happen out of nowhere.
