Jason Kidd to Dallas? Here's a roundup of coverage and opinion:

ESPN's Ric Bucher broke the story of Kidd's desire for a trade here. He mentions that Dallas reached out this previous week to inquire about a deal.

Stan McNeal at the Sporting News thinks Kidd to Dallas makes sense, but get's a hilarious email reply from Mark Cuban when he floats it by him: "Step away from your crack dealer."

Jan Hubbard at the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram quotes Mark Cuban, who is being consistent on the Mavs point guard situation, answering "no" when asked if the Mavs were considering point guard help.

In a chat, Dallas Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor doesn't see a Kidd trade happening. He also doesn't consider Devin Harris injury prone.

Peter Vecsey at Foxsports thinks Kidd is playing poorly to force a trade, using a late game pass to Jason Collins (35% free throw shooter) in a tight game as an example.

Over at Yahoo Sports, Kelly Dwyer says that a deal won't be easy if New Jersey expects to get a good return for the point guard. Steve Aschburner at Sports Illustrated says much the same thing, summarizing the issue: "Bad teams have no need for a player with that sort of price tag, while good teams are loath to give up pieces that have gotten them this far."

Some Mavs-related and other interesting links of note:

John Hollinger gives Devin Harris some of his patented stat-love while outlining why trading him for Kidd makes little sense.

Looks like the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett may play against Dallas on Thursday, despite his abdominal strain.

Here's the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram game story. Writer Jan Hubbard outlines how the Mavericks experimented with different line-ups in the blowout win.

In the Dallas Morning News Eddie Sefko echoes others in pointing to the game as a statement that Josh Howard deserves to be on the all star team.

Art Garcia at Mavs Courtside View summarizes the blowout win in front of what he describes as a "listless crowd" at FedEx Forum. Art also lets us know about a cool Mavs-Celtics watch party at Dave & Busters on Walnut Hill & 75.

Charley Rosen thinks the Spurs are either sandbagging or in big trouble. John Hollinger asks a similar question: Are the Spurs a lottery team?

RE: Kidd
I got this from ESPN's Marc Stein chat session.

SportsNation Marc Stein: Can't believe how long it took to find a Kidd question. Thought you guys would be more ready to talk about this one.

SportsNation Marc Stein: I do think it's more likely than not that Kidd goes because he wants out, New Jersey realizes it and there's no market for Vince Carter. Problem is, not even Dallas -- which I believe to be Kidd's No. 1 choice if he can make it happen -- has the pieces to get a deal done working directly with the Nets. So if a third or fourth team has to be pulled in, it gets even more complicated.

Adam (Dallas, TX): As a Mavs fan, I've been somewhat concerned by the latest J-Kidd trade talk. Why would the Mavs even think about giving up a young Devin Harris for an aging Kidd? Chemistry aside, Kidd's old and only has a few years left. And even Harris has a better outside shot these days. I keep on hearing you say pull the trigger. Why?

SportsNation Marc Stein: For starters, I have said since last spring that I think Dallas has to make a bigger change to the current group to get over the last two playoff exits. And you're not going to get someone like Kidd without giving up something good. Dirk is obviously untouchable. So when teams call Dallas, they ask for Josh Howard and Devin Harris. Josh is closer to untouchable/irreplacable in the Mavs' scheme than Harris. That's why Devin would have to be the guy.

SportsNation Marc Stein: Furthermore . . .

SportsNation Marc Stein: If you're the Mavs, you have to make a decision. Go for it all now. Or let the Dirk-Josh-Devin core develop if it needs more time. With the way teams like the Lakers and Portland and New Orleans have already closed the gap, I think Dallas is better off going for it now. And a Kidd-Nowitzki combination puts a whole new spin on the top of the West in my estimation.

maybe im crazy
but i feel a sense of loyalty to guys like stack and harris... its back when people were wanting to trade dirk for shaq and what not... i would rather not when a title with the players i love then sell out and get a title....

of course jason kidd on this team would is pretty intriguing... but stack has been such a team player here... and as much as i hate john hollinger... he says devin harris has a higher PER than kidd this year...

basically im saying i dont want to make a trade... i like this team and i love the guys on it and i want to win it all with them...

oh my god
i hope not.

it's gonna be golden state all over again if we play portland in the playoffs.

by bluefish on Jan 30, 2008 4:20 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This would be a huge mistake.
I wonder how our team would feel about shipping Devin and their moral leader off for a player like Kidd, who has undeniable talent, but has a reputation for destroying chemistry in the locker room.

Plus like Zack said, Devin has a higher PER than Kidd this year, and the gap will only grow larger in years to come.

This is a huge gamble, and we are getting shit for implied odds. The goal is a championship THIS YEAR, but I don't really see this trade making this team better than it is currently.

I agree.
I'm going to have to take a look into the statistical comparison between giving up two Devins and Stack and the pieces we would get in return to see what it implies, but it really appears as if this is a gamble to see if Kidd on the back side of his career is enough to put the Mavs over the hump for a season - which to this point, the only 'weakness' we see in the Mavs from last year is defensive efficiency. Granted, Kidd is a good defender, but so is Harris and statistically he's having a better year than Kidd.

They've already proved they can get to the Finals with this group. I just don't see the benefit other than adding the sizzle of a triple-double machine that has the same number of championship rings that I do.

Adding a new point guard into a new offense with 30-odd games to play before the playoffs start shows ridiculous faith in this working. Just seems like shooting dice to me. I certainly hope there's some underlying benefit to this that I'm missing.

To clarify...
Devin's effciency is statistically better this season than Kidd according to Hollinger's Jesus Formula That Tells All About How Good You Are.

Well
I don't think there's much danger of Dirk f***ing Toni Braxton, so Kidd should be just fine here this time.
If Dwyade falls 8 times and gets up 9 times in the woods without anyone around to hear it, does it make a sound?

No, No and more NO
This team with the new additions they have already is a title contender. They do not need Jason Kidd. Devin Harris is playing phenomenal basketball this year. He has improved every year since he's been playing. This is his first year as the starting point guard and imop he's only going to improve even more. Kidd will not improve. He doesn't shoot better than Devin and he's not a good defender. Yes, he has more assists than Devin, but that is NOT what this Mavs team has asked Devin to do. They have asked him to push the ball, get to the rim and score while getting a few assists. That is what he has done..in spades. Kidd does rebound well, but the Mavs as a team rebound well (8th in the league in defensive rebounding). So besides having "more experience" ..ie...OLD.. what would Kidd really bring to the Mavericks? I cannot think of anything he could bring that we don't have in abundance already.

About Kidd's defense....
He's actually a good defender. Really good. Like NBA All-defensive-team-9-seasons-in-a-row good.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/kiddja01.html

He's a statistical monster. I'm just worried about how he fits into the team with less than half the season to be playoff ready.

by DitchThePlaybook on Jan 30, 2008 6:28 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's true..
And besides being a great defender, Kidd is a real playmaker. The only guy better is Steve Nash (sniff, sniff). I am against the trade, however. Devin has upside, for sure. Just seems like a no.1 pick thrown in makes this deal a little unbalanced. Plus, Portland would be really dangerous next year.
