Pounding the Rock

The game-thread banter is always amusing over there.

And I suppose they're looking quite forward to this one. The game thread's been up for two days already. Everyone's looking for Kidd to get his lunch handed to him by Mr. Longoria.

Off topic
But the Nets are playing the Bucks right now and Devin is on the floor.  I haven't seen enough of the game to fully gauge how he's doing, but I have to say he looks weird in a Nets uniform.

by Marie on Feb 28, 2008 7:07 PM CST reply actions

16 with 5 left in the half and 2 assists
id say hes doing pretty good, sad for us but happy for devin, hopefully he can help that team make a playoff run.. and agreed just doesnt look right in that uniform

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

Damn
How is that a foul on Josh when he was sandwiched between Manu and Horry?

by Marie on Feb 28, 2008 7:32 PM CST reply actions

not sure if the rule applies before the ball is..
inbounded..but that was a moving screen on horry.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

The spurs...
are missing..hopefully they continue this trend..

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Bass
He could be the X factor in this game and maybe in a future playoff series.  I think he could match up well offensively against Tim Duncan, probably have to pull the switch and let Dirk defend.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 7:45 PM CST reply actions

Here's the thing
and the only thing that worries me about Kidd-

Our current mavs team is SOOOOO different when he's out there versus when he's on the bench.  That makes it very hard to get any kind of rhythm going when he's not out there.  So how do you deal with that?  Make a 34 y/o PG play 40+ mins a game?  Or struggle through when he's not there?

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 7:59 PM CST reply actions

Cassell?
I know his is an older JET, but its the only decent answer I can think of... After hearing that cubes only offered barry 1 mil... hopefully they offer cassell a little more, since money is so important to him

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

I wasn't sold
on Cassell until I saw the last two games.  Now I think that he'd be perfect for this team.  Give him 18 mins a game, let kidd play 30-35.  Perfect.

However, it seems like a done deal that he's going to the Celts.

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

how the mavs let him go
with out them making a STRONG push, is frustrating.  I mean if this is the year and all... how do we not even let the world KNOW that we WANT him and will do what it takes to get him here.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think
that's it.  I think its the cassell-garnett friendship that keeps it from being realistic.  I'd bet the Mavs make a hard push, and actually offer more cash, but just can't compete with the history.

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

got home late from work... just caught up
it is truly amazing how the sterns complain after every foul called on them, and how they oversell every defensive and offensive possession.  I know devin and dirk are bad, but man, this team is really bad.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:03 PM CST reply actions

Dirk
Not as efficient offensively tonight.  Hopefully he'll get going soon.

by Marie on Feb 28, 2008 8:04 PM CST reply actions

Duncan
just got POSTERIZED by Bass.

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:05 PM CST reply actions

pick and roll w/ kidd and bass..
been waiting on it ever since he came, first time they run it Bass knocks down the 10 footer.  I love it.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 8:05 PM CST reply actions

+1
if he can do that with kidd, especially against teams notoriously known for defending the pick and roll, that could be unstoppable.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

Yup
It gives so many options, from the 10 ft shot, to the drive and finish, to the touch pass to the corner for 3.  It's so versatile, it's hard to defend.

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

Manu...
If I had a gun with two bullets and was stuck in a room with Manu Ginobli and Osama Bin Laden...I would shoot Manu in the face twice...I don't think I hate any professional athlete more than him

by smt83 on Feb 28, 2008 8:08 PM CST reply actions

haha
I can't really disagree...  (Besides, OSBL is a boogeyman that's probably been dead for 2-3 years already).

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

and his bald spot
has gotten even bigger... must be from hittin his head, when he's under sterns desk

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

BAHAHAHA!!!
His bald spot has gotten bigger...oh that dumb horse faced man...

by smt83 on Feb 28, 2008 8:11 PM CST up reply actions

Am I a traitor for liking Manu?
I mean, I hate him when he plays against the Mavs, but I like him any other time.

by Marie on Feb 28, 2008 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

Ouch
Am I going to be banned from here now?

by Marie on Feb 28, 2008 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

say 3 hail mary's
and one hail Dirk, then you shall be forgiven my child.

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

HATE HIM
I respect every other spur and their game, even though I might not like some of them, but cant stand manu AT ALL... and you really cant if your the mavs.

There cant be anymore looking up at this team any more, we were in their heads, and since this trade they think they have us again.  We (as fans and as a team) should revert back to the AJ thinking of this team anymore

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

Not at all.
He plays for the hated Spurs, but I can't help but be in awe of his game. I guess I have too much respect for what he's doing right now.

by DitchThePlaybook on Feb 28, 2008 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

Looks like Bass...
...is snapping out of his recent slump.

by Marie on Feb 28, 2008 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Gotta love..
how he alway's gets up for big games.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

Of course, here's the problem
Duncan could grab Bass' balls and squeeze, and he wouldn't get called for the foul...

In fact, I think that's what just happened...

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:12 PM CST reply actions

Maybe...
someone should grab Duncan's balls when he goes to the basket...then he could justify crying about a call

by smt83 on Feb 28, 2008 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

not worth it
not only is there nothing there to grab, but watching him cry after every touch foul with the rest of the sterns is too painful to watch

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:18 PM CST up reply actions

I f'ing want to kill Many even more after that...
Avery should send in Magloire to break his knee caps

by smt83 on Feb 28, 2008 8:15 PM CST reply actions

Bass
finally living up too his REAL nickname "B(ad)ASS"...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:19 PM CST reply actions

Not a bad first half...
considering we are playing in their gym, and our 5th game with kidd...

Im glad we didnt play magloire tonight, so we can develop him into our system and the sterns cant look  at him and laugh in his first game with us.  He can hopefully he can get some sort of consistent minutes with this team, and be used to spell damp when he goes out, bc dirk at the 5 aint gonna cut it.

Rebounding, shooting %'s, BENCH, all look good...

Reason why this game is tied... 8 TURNOVERS for dallas vs 2 for SA.

I really hope this team gets these down... if this continues, it will cost us BIG later on... but I will be patient for those to come down.

Duncan is owning us... I have watch some stern games the past few weeks, and havent really see him play with this much energy and intensity in awhile... And thats good for us, I want him when he's at his best, not when he is so-so...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:27 PM CST reply actions

SA
Wonder if AJ can figure out how to shut down the spurs... well lets look at who's scoring

Duncam : 20 pts
Fagu: 15
Longoria's French pastry: 6 (wonder if he wants to rethink that statement about us after not showing up in the first half)
Finely: 3
Bowen: 3

So shut down the 3 man crew, and basically shut down the sterns...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:37 PM CST reply actions

With a win
and it'd be huge.

It would really propel us emotionally into these next stretch of tough games

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:40 PM CST up reply actions

Watching Dirk on Duncan
is just an IDIOTIC move by avery... Sometimes I wonder what is in his pregame gumbo

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:38 PM CST reply actions

I'm glad we are drifting further and further
from the basket... finally damp gets a nice follow...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:40 PM CST reply actions

Remember when the NBA
used to call hand checking against tim duncan when he was on the block?

Oh wait, the last time they did, he bitched about it so much Joey Crawford threw him out of the game in dallas, and got crawford fired from the nba...

Gotta love them sterns

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:42 PM CST reply actions

Nowitzki on Oberto..
much better...

Duncan finally misses a 20ft shot

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:44 PM CST reply actions

DIRK
FOR FUCKING THREE!

by BrodyV on Feb 28, 2008 8:44 PM CST reply actions

Dirk finally hits a 3...
7 in the quarter, hope this gets him going... he seemed to have settle a little too much for the jumper in the first half after a few no calls when he was taking going inside a little more.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:46 PM CST reply actions

cheap shot rob...
way to run into dirk and bail him out on taking a dumb shot

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:49 PM CST reply actions

and dirk hits all 3
he already has two misses tonight... hopefully he has those out of his system, especially if this game gets close

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Well we shut down duncan..
and wadda know we have a lead because of it?

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:52 PM CST reply actions

classic fagu acting on that possession
down low for SA... thats why I HATE him marie... cant stand that play.

Even when devin did it, and even when Dirk does it, I dont like it.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:54 PM CST reply actions

The refs are the ones giving him the calls.
It's the part of his game I don't care for, but he makes up for it.

by DitchThePlaybook on Feb 28, 2008 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

hey bowen
shut the hell up bitch... I hope terry punches that grandpa

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:55 PM CST reply actions

please
put in juwan howard to knock the shit out of that bitch bowen... if i saw him on the street i would punch him in the face... then run

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

C'mon Mavs
Hold it together. I don't care what they say to you, hit a 3 to pay them back or something. Stop losing your cool Terry. And AVERY...damn.

by Avery210 on Feb 28, 2008 8:55 PM CST reply actions

finely
of course hits a three to get them rolling, and then duncan hand checks his way around bass, pushes howard in the back to go after the rebound, and then gets the lucky bounce...

And of course now aj gets a T... only too add to good run right now for them...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 8:58 PM CST reply actions

shut up craig...
you make no sense... go interview someone from goodwill where you got that suit

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:00 PM CST reply actions

dirks foul
how was that not continuation?

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:01 PM CST reply actions

ANOTHER missed free throw?
3 points... thats what this game will come down too... write it down.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

hey finely
calm the hell down with the shots...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:03 PM CST reply actions

Finley killing us.
With Dirk, Damp, Kidd, Jet, Howard - and Finley, the Mavs have like 75 million in payroll on the floor at once. That's got to be some sort of record.

by DitchThePlaybook on Feb 28, 2008 9:03 PM CST reply actions

i wish i was smart enough
to turn this off and not watch us get screwed in the 4th quarter, leading me to throw my laptop across the room...

but im not

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:08 PM CST reply actions

haha...
I have a few holes in my wall that I had to fix after last years GS series, the garnett deal not getting done and the kidd trade... I have yet to punish and electrical equipment,

Actually, I did my phone when I was at game 6 in the finals... It left a mark on the side of the AAC that is still there

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

3rd quarters...
So this s now the second game in a row where we were tied at the half, went up 10 and then blew...  I read somewhere (I think in Seiko's Q&A today) that the team is AWARE of this, but what are they doing to FIX our 3rd quarters.

Keeping our composure was not a point of emphasis obviously.  The T by Terry (even though Bowen deserved a mouthing from him) cant be something that we let happen to have the momentum to the STERNS favor...

On a positive note, we are still in this game.  We still are getting used Kidd, and for having 11 TO's as a team, you have to like the way we are playing.  This is not like the NO game, where it was a circus of chickens that showed up in mavs uniforms.  No matter what the outcome of this game, as long as we continue playing the way we have, I like the way we have played so far.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:10 PM CST reply actions

holy shiz
can we please not put them into the penalty with 9 min left in the 4th?

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:16 PM CST reply actions

howards foul?
how the hell does fagu get away with coming across his back and howard get called for that?

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:19 PM CST reply actions

that
was the biggest bs call ever... pitiful... but not shocked they screwed us

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

Bass
I like it... but of course finely hits a 3 to respond

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:21 PM CST reply actions

BASS!!
Having a great game..and this comeback w/ Dirk and JKidd on the bench was huge..come on stars...finish them off

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:22 PM CST reply actions

I really hate TD's arms waiving in the air...
after EVERY SINGLE CALL AGAINST HIM... but damn he's good

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:23 PM CST reply actions

screw him too
f that entire team... all i do all game long is complain and yell at the television.. yet somehow the annoying spurs find a way to complain more than me... f them

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...
these two teams really get up for their matchups.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

Damp or Bass now?
Damp picked up some quick fouls, so he hasnt played much, but Bass is rolling right now...

I say we ride it out... this is a good experiment...

But AJ goes with damp

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:27 PM CST reply actions

If the scoring doesn't come..
I put Bass back in and run the pick and pops, puts too much stress on the SA D and gives Kidd all kinds of options.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

hey grandpa bowen
jump a little bit higher and bitch a little more about it... cuz its still a foul

Even though dirk sold it a little ;)

4 FT's missed dirk?  WTF?  Thats what this game is gonna come down too if we lose... I called it

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:32 PM CST reply actions

with finely on J5
cant we go get it too him somehow and not dirk on the iso play with bowen on him?

new game plan... on offense we go to the guy who's NOT being covered by bowen

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:35 PM CST reply actions

yah...
dont go at bowen.. .cuz he will foul and not get called for it... go away from him

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like to go with Bass now..
he played heavy min in the 2nd half and TD only had 4 points til he went out... so his D was good, and he had good energy on offense

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:37 PM CST reply actions

make
your fuckin free throws!

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:39 PM CST reply actions

gotta make our FT's
when were lucky enough to get to the line...gonna be too close

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:39 PM CST reply actions

Now would be the time
to turn off the TV if you dont deal with close games well...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:39 PM CST reply actions

what the hell
no freaking foul there..

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:41 PM CST reply actions

damnit mavs
2 easy shots missed... f

and a fuckin bail out call by dan crawford.. f that

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:41 PM CST reply actions

not surprised
this game may be decided cuz the refs suck dick

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:42 PM CST reply actions

TD hits both free throws??
WTF?  Of course, I guess every blind squirrel finds a lucky acorn every once in awhile.

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:43 PM CST reply actions

KIDD OUT??
Another classic avery move here...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:43 PM CST reply actions

if we lose, kidd doesnt get blamed...
Maybe someone feeds him stats...like this one

Name Min Reb Ast PF Pts
D Harris 21 1 5 2 21

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:45 PM CST up reply actions

so he doesnt want kidd to be blamed
but instead give us yet ANOTHER reason why we should blame him

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

I cant handle OT right now
My doctor is not going to appreciate my heart rate levels I have right now...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:44 PM CST reply actions

BOWEN
ALL OVER TERRY...what the fuck...this really was bullshit by the refs tonight

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:46 PM CST reply actions

Dirk stays down,
bc his free throws cost us this game...

But this was a great effort though

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:46 PM CST reply actions

fuck effort
we blow it again in a big time game... f that

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

effort
bc when FT's, avery's poor coaching, and no-call's determine games... I can live with that... especially since we hung in there.  Had this been a blow out by SA, then I could justify your thinking right now...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

im just angry and bitter
its like i could see this coming...

WHEN IS THE NBA GOING TO REALIZE THAT BRUCE BOWEN IS A DIRTY PIECE OF SHIT?!?!

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

fucking fuck
not surprised we fucked it up

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:46 PM CST reply actions

Damn...
Sucks we lost but we answered the dumbass big question...can we hang? Yes, yes we can. Eat shit Spurs including you Finley.

by Avery210 on Feb 28, 2008 9:47 PM CST reply actions

makes the games w/ LA and UTAH
even bigger, cant afford to go 1 in 4 over the next 5 days.

by bradybob on Feb 28, 2008 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

Kidd
Not sure I like keeping Kidd out at the end, btw. I think I understand why but c'mon...

by Avery210 on Feb 28, 2008 9:48 PM CST reply actions

why?
what logical explanation can you/avery give me as too why?

As long as he is directed to NOT SHOOT THE BALL, unless its a lay up, why?  Otherwise why is he here?  Would Devin had been in the last few min of that game?

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

Wait
I "understand" why Avery did it b/c he's not comfortable or some bullshit. I'm not saying I agree by any means. I was only saying I understand why Avery would do it b/c it's Avery. Love him but he plays too many mind games sometimes. Again, not that I would agree with it. In fact, it was just plain stupid.

by Avery210 on Feb 28, 2008 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

Keyword there
"bullshit"... thats exactly how you describe that last move...  Its not THAT we lost, its HOW we lost.  Forget the no calls, the calls, the refs, the sterns, whatever...

I have been a supporter of Avery, questioned him at times, but have supported him...  After tonight, I can no longer say that I will until he proves me wrong.

Up until Kidd being out at the end, I was ok with what he had done in this game... Maybe pulling bass out in the 4th and the T in the third were some things that some might have criticized him on if we still had lost... but pulling kidd??

This has proved everyone right who said that Kidd and Avery were going to clash, and that Avery wasnt gonna let his team be run by kidd.  Total ego move IMO.  I see why he put in Stack, he hits big shots for us... but then pull out howard, or terry, or someone ELSE who wasnt shooting -40% from the floor for the game.

Cuban looked to be staring down avery at the end, when finely was shooting his FT's... hmmmm... looks like we may have the owner swinging with us now too...

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 10:24 PM CST up reply actions

and if you have tivo
rewind the fucking thing and you will see that when JET got "blocked" the ball went out of bounds off duncan... fuckin  bullshit

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 9:48 PM CST reply actions

I did rewind it...
also you'll see "sterns" across the front of the guys in white jersey's....

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

What
was Avery thinking? I thought we got Kidd to close out games. Our offense stalled without him. Avery makes some dumb decisions sometimes.

by jdees2 on Feb 28, 2008 9:49 PM CST reply actions

Never thought I'd say this
but I'd like to see the "whistles" beat the lakers to keep them in check

by Toddy on Feb 28, 2008 9:55 PM CST reply actions

Mavs fans..
Cant feel too bad about this one. JKIDD is bringing intensity to this team, and his leadership has been a real positive. We lost this game, but a few different calls, or maybe Dirk hitting a few of those missed shots, and we woulda won it. Kidd is integrating quickly, and I feel good about Dallas in the post season.

by Dirkanoid on Feb 28, 2008 10:09 PM CST reply actions

i am so mad right now
the nba is a freaking joke... this is a league where you can trade players who are freakin retired and have nothing to do with their current team... this is a league that allows you to trade a guy, and as long as you arent stupid and blab about it.. that guy can come back to that team in 30 days... its unbelievable!

this is a league where unhappy players can cry their way out of a signed contract and go sign with a contender... its the dumbest shit ever... (i know the mavs were involved in all of these dumb things about the nba... but it just goes to show you what a joke this league is)

i mean this is a professional sports league.. alot of money and emotions ride on this stuff and i swear its run like a fucking YMCA league...

this is a league where games that are close basically come down to a referees subjectivity down the stretch... the refs have more control over outcomes in basketball than any sport ever...  watching basketball makes me so damn angry, because the refs screw up all the time... the subjectivity of the nba drives me insane

there is so much wrong with this league... yet i still watch every mavs game... and let myself get worked up... i let this team control my emotional stability and far too often i end up pissed and angry and confused and sad....

i hate the nba... but i love the mavs... and i just pray that we can win the nba title this year so i can stop stressing out and shortening my life... too bad the nba wont let that happen...

by zkmavz on Feb 28, 2008 10:15 PM CST reply actions

Take solice in this...
Our Mavs are legit. It's crazy that we don't need to be a #1,2 or 3 in playoffs. A #8 can easily beat a #1 this year (insert dumbass GS joke here if you care to).

All the pundits saying the Kidd trade might not work are idiots. Granted, we need to play him at the end of the game (sigh), but I love how this team is clicking. Not sure what Magloire can bring but he could help in games like this. Bass surprised me tonight. Didn't expect such a solid game against the Spurs.

I get pissed at refs, Manu, Bowen, Finley, etc. too. But, I saw a lot that I liked about tonight. I saw one thing I hated...Kidd on the eff'n bench at end of game. Here I go...getting mad now. :)

Absolute lunacy in each case.

LUNACY I TELL YOU!!!

If Dwyade falls 8 times and gets up 9 times in the woods without anyone around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Avery SUCKS...
I'm sorry, but he's got some serious explaining to do after tonight...

When Jason Kidd was brought in, Avery was all excited, talking about "Jason is a guy that will get us touchdowns in the redzone. He'll be a real leader for this team down the stretch of games."

WHERE THE HELL WAS HE, AVERY? Are you freaking kidding me? We continue to try and run ISOs for Dirk at the top of the key, and it RARELY works. Get Jason Kidd in the damn game, run Dirk off screens, and let them do what they do...

Once again, Avery Johnson out-thinks himself at the end of a big game... Pathetic... His job has got to be on the line come playoff time this year.

couldnt agree more...
did anyone else notice CUBAN staring Avery down when finely was shooting the last free throws??

Cuban HAS too talk to him about his damn ego... seriously

after some time to calm down
i thought the mavs would lose this game going into it, but i was pleasantly surprised that the mavs damn near won it.

it was close and could have gone either way, ref calls can always go either way, and Dallas certainly got more free throws tonight,  but....

if i ever see dan crawford in the street i will stick my foot sideways up his ass.

ok... glad i got that out... the ball did appear to go off duncan, not damp; not sure why duncan got that foul call at the end, but still, the game shouldn't come down to one call here or there, it'll drive you nuts.  the most important thing i got out of this was........

avery may possibly be insane.

their is no justification good enough for leaving kidd out the last seconds of the game.

absolutely unbelievable.

this team better perform well in the playoffs or the little general may be out on his butt;  don't think cuban didn't make a note in his head about the coach's decision to bench kidd in this game.

A few thoughts
  • Why was Kidd not on the floor in the final minute? It just struck me as bizarre.

  • Kidd is REALLY active on defense. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that trading Devin for Kidd is a significant defensive upgrade. However, Diop's loss was very apparent on defense. Meaning...

  • Our interior defense is highly suspect without a center on the floor. Magloire's signing may turn out to be incredibly important if he can be at least decent with post defense.

  • Related to the above: Duncan is still a beast. He had trouble with Bass, but he more than made up for it on the offensive end. Again, Magloire would have been really helpful.

  • I'm still waiting for a game when all the starters are "on" offensively. That will be a scary game to watch for the opposition.

  • I kind of like our offense with and without Kidd. Our iso offense is still surprisingly effective, and that will be even more so as a change-up from Kidd. ISO: Too static as a core system, good as a change-up.

  • I'm rather glad the trade ended up with Hassell gone and Devean George here.

  • This wasn't our best game defensively, but it was primarily due to Duncan. We handled Parker, Manu, and the rest of the team pretty well. They had some open shots, but our rotations were generally good.

  • My general impression is that we are still going through growing pains but that we definitely have a contender here. We have a gaping hole behind Dampier, which hopefully Magloire will fill nicely. But we'll find out about that later.

it doesn't really matter
who guards duncan.  nobody in the league has the ability to slow him down when he wants to score.  i repeat, NOBODY.  that's why he's got 4 rings.  and he got them w/o the aide of a superstar sidekick ala shaq (ginobili wasn't always this good).  when the mavs won in the playoffs against the spurs, duncan went nuts.  it just has to be overcome, which the mavs have been good at.

by ninjoker on Feb 28, 2008 11:23 PM CST up reply actions

Bass did a fine job
While Bass was guarding him he scored 4 pts.  I think that Avery needs to shed the "veterans win games" mentality and give Bass some more burn.  The guy was our leading scorer at half, is owning Duncan on offense and keeping his own at the defensive side and he never sees another minute after Kidd and Dirk sub in w/ 6 to go (we were up by 5 i think?)  I think the Kidd not coming in convtroversy isnt a controversy if he leaves him in the game bc we dont need 2, we are already up 6.

Agreed
I see why AJ went with Damp... but he ALWAYS prefers a vet to a young guy when it comes down to the wire... Bass could've had 100 pts and Duncan 0, but in with the game close AJ will ALWAYS go with the VET.

Totally irrelevant though, in that situation I think we all would've most likely gone with Damp who has had success (at times) defending duncan, same goes for the arguments about the refs... this is not what (should) be really eating at us right now...

Its the fact that our Saviour Kidd, who Avery and Co has supposedly brought in to "save" this team WASNT IN THE DAMN GAME in the biggest moments.  I dont care if we had been running iso plays all damn game, if he isnt gonna play in the big time moments of the game, WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING HERE?

You think Devin would have been in that last play, to try and get to the basket?  I dont know.  Can someone look back at some close game that devin has played and and see if avery went with him or not?

Again, I think whats frustrating to "most" of us here, is ONCE AGAIN... Its not THAT we lost... Its HOW we lost...

It was a great game, until AJ "Avery-ed" it again in the MOST crucial time of the game... Just frustrating...

I can't believe...
that you guys are whining about the calls in this game. The Spurs got only 22 free throw attempts for the game, while Dirk himself got 21! The refs were treating him like they treated DWade against the Mavs in the '06 Finals.

by Key on Feb 29, 2008 2:00 AM CST reply actions

i dont think
we whined alot about the calls... i think we whined and complained when bruce, manu or duncan would actually commit a coul, the ref would call it.. and then those babies would cry like they diodnt touch anyone even though my blind sister even saw the foul...

i did complain when duncan traveled then put the ball in damps chest, and since he made the play look so awkward the weak minded refs called a foul, which wasnt there, to give the spurrrs 2 free throws to take the lead... just because a guy looks awkward on a shot doesnt mean it is a foul...

and the other time i complained was when terry was blocked/bodied by bowen, and the ball went out of bounds off tim duncan (rewind your tivos and look)... and they immediately gave the ball to the spurs... that was obviously mavs ball with 1.6 secs left... yah we would have screwed it up and still lost... but it would have been nice to have one more chance

and in the end... spurs fans cheer for bruce bowen and manu ginobili... if you dont see something wrong with cheering for the dirtiest player in the league and that fairy.. .then i feel sorry for you... enjoy your tacos

If you were to review the game's dialogue above
the whining you would see is about much more than simply the Spurs' reactions to calls.

Concerning Bowen and Ginobili: Bruce is a tough, hard-nosed defender and most NBA players don't like it when their opponents actually makes them work hard to score. Manu is having an incredible season - he's fourth in the league in PER and his per-40-min numbers are just about the same as Kobe Bryant. He should be in the MVP talk, but just like his All-Star snub, he'll basically be ignored. But if y'all had these two guys on the Mavs, you would love them as well.

P.S. You don't like tacos?

wtf
i guess you didn't see Dirk flopping, trying to get calls?
