"I have to say it’s the first time since I’ve owned the Mavs when I’ve walked downstairs and saw our centers taking jump shots and that I didn’t cringe," owner Mark Cuban said.
Q. If you were to switch to the NBA, what team would you want to play for?
[Sue] Bird: The Knicks.
Q. You wouldn't want to play for the Mavs or the Heat?
Bird: Maybe for Mark Cuban. But I associate NBA basketball with the Knicks. It's a no-brainer.
790 The Ticket, Miami: "Is there a more difficult owner in the league to deal with outside of Cuban?"
Stern: "Probably not, but it’s good copy. And I think that Mark in the broad sense is good for the league."
For reasons not clear, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban left his bench-area seat with less than a minute remaining in the game walked out of the inner-arena area.
While the teams huddled in timeout with 39.2 seconds remaining, Cuban walked past the media work room, staring ahead, head shaking. He then walked through a hallway door and into the Mavericks locker room, where he apparently watched the end of the game.
After the game, as reporters waited outside the locker room during the league-mandated cooling off period for players and coaches, Cuban exited the locker room and walked past reporters without comment.
Still walking by himself, he walked out the Rose Garden's back dock, got into a vehicle and left.
When tempers and such start impacting the fan experience both in Dallas and Denver, and it requires special security, thats not what I want for Mavs or Nuggets fans. No one takes more abuse and gets more threats on the road than I do. So I know exactly how it feels. I’ve also had my family and friends spit on at games in this series. So I know how unpleasant that is as well. It’s a dirty secret that all arenas need to do a better job of protection for visiting team fans, particularly during the playoffs.
So at this point I would like to apologize to you and your mom KMart for my comment. I should have not said anything and I was wrong. Hopefully you will accept the apology and we can move on.
When the series comes back to Dallas, your family, and the family of other Nuggets players are welcome to stay in my suite, with my family. Its amazing how tempers mellow when real people talk to each other and realize that its still just a game.
Before I took over for the Mavs back in the day they used to drink and smoke in the locker room, so I can think of worse things.
"If it's not important enough to them to lay it out every game the rest of the season, they won't be back. I don't care what their contract is. I would rather turn over the roster 100 percent than subject fans to another game like last night.’’ - Mark Cuban
The NBA tells me a tech should have been called on you for throwing the elbow and that I should pay a 25k dollar fine because owners aren’t supposed to get mad. Ever.
In the spirit of the joy of my getting fined and your not getting the tech, have the Nuggets PR folks contact the Mavs PR folks and I will donate 25k to the charity of your choice.
Unless of course your coach thinks that the wrong thing to do, or the NBA says I can’t because it would be a violation of a rule. In which case, I will find a charity that I think you would like and make the donation in your name.
"The worst thing you can be is a 40-win team. Sometimes, you've just got to make a decision that you just want to develop guys for the long term. That's just the decision teams make."
I hate to lose, and we are going to do everything we can to get everyone on the same page so we can finish games the same way we have been starting them.
Thanks to all Mavs fans for hanging in there with us. I hate to lose games as much as you do, but the season is just starting. We have gone through struggles before, and Im sure we will go through them again. As will every team.
