Better spacing and feel for those around him have Nowitzki back in a comfort zone. In each of the three wins, Nowitzki has scored at least 10 points in the first quarter.

His fast starts have coincided with those of the team. The Mavs have enjoyed double-figure leads in the opening period in wins against Phoenix, Portland and Chicago.

For one game, Dampier was terrific. And even though it was only one game, it was the sort of showing that makes the Mavericks tingle thinking about what could be if they could get consistent production from their men in the middle. DeSagana Diop had five blocks in 11 minutes against the Bulls.

"When we get a lot out of the center position, we'll take our chances against anybody," Devin Harris said. "When those guys are assertive on the offensive end, it makes the defense think about them. It makes it easier for everybody to cash in on opportunities."
