The Numbers Say Roddy's Performance Was On Schedule

After the performance of Rodrigue Beaubois last night, which some called a career-night (not really), I said on twitter that the numbers had such a breakout already on schedule. I was talking about the per minute/per possession production of the third-year guard, that was indeed at least decent all the way. Not necessarily in every game, but overall. I made a list of all players this season that played their most minutes at the point-guard position with at least 100 minutes at that spot. The list contains 57 guards, including Roddy and Jason Kidd. Then I calculated the average of every category and compared those averages to Roddy's numbers this season (the same approach that Patrick Minton uses on his site, also got the WP48 metric from there).

The numbers are mostly self-explanatory. The first table shows "Per 100 Possession"-values, except for the percentages and where otherwise specified (PPS = Points Per Shot, MPG = Minutes Per Game). Then you'll have the difference to the average and Roddy's rank among the list of 57 guards that met my criteria.

The second table shows advanced metrics. Synergy is Synergy's rank among all players in the NBA, overall and for offense (Off) and defense (Def). SynergySports calculates a PPP (Point Per Possession) value on both ends of the floor for possessions the player was involved in. It would have been really clever to just insert the PPP values, but somehow I used the overall rank here and I don't want to dig up all the numbers for the players again. It doesn't really matter anyway, the ranking remains the same.

The list of players that played at least 100 minutes of point guard this season and also their majority of minutes at that spot basically contains all starting points and their respective backups. As you can see, Roddy is currently a mixed bag, but doesn't have to shy away from this talented group at all. He lacks playmaking abilities and doesn't earn many freebies, but his scoring is right around the average and he is one of the best rebounding, stealing and blocking guards out there. The advanced metrics confirm it as he ranks in the upper half in every category despite Synergy's Offensive Rank (PPP).

So Roddy has been able to do a little bit of this and that throughout different games thus far and so the advanced metrics had him scheduled for a game where he finally can put it all together to fill the boxscore.

After the jump you'll find the sortable list of guards that I used as well as a highlight video of Roddy's performance last night. To lower expectations: Roddy is not an elite or even overall "above-the-average"-player (has at least not shown what he did last night on a consistent basis), but isn't it good to see that he can compete with all these names you'll find on the list?
