Report: Mavericks to sign Wayne Ellington

Woj reports Dallas is signing the former UNC shooting guard

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Moments ago Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted the following

The four year veteran comes to the Mavericks after a three year stint with Minnesota, followed by splitting last season with Cleveland and Memphis. He comes to Dallas posting a career average 6.9 points per game, but a very solid 38% from three.

His professional career was preceded by a three year career at the University of North Carolina, where he finished his junior season in 2009 by being named the NCAA tourrnament's Most outstanding player.

Having not followed Ellington since he entered the NBA, it's hard to comment as far as where he fits on this team. His shooting is certainly appealing, particularly since if Dallas wants to continue to pursue Andrew Bynum they may have to trade Vince Carter or Shawn Marion to make room. Given the size of the deal, twitter is currently predicting he MAY slide into the "Mid Level Exception", meaning Dallas still may have room to make some moves.

This is the kind of gamble I've been looking forward to as Dallas tries to fill out the roster. Given the success that fellow Tarheel Brandan Wright has had with Dallas, once can expect Ellington to be excited about his opportunity with the 2013-2014 Mavericks.
