Dirk Nowitzki ruled out for preseason opener with hip injury

The Mavericks face of the franchise won't play on Tuesday, but the injury is deemed not serious, Carlisle says.

I noted in Saturday's scrimmage recap that Dirk left the game and was looked at briefly by team trainers. Apparently, there was a little something to that.

This comes from Rick Carlisle at today's practice at the AAC, in which Dirk did not participate.

It's the first preseason game, and a contusion is just a fancy doctor word for a bruise. This really isn't a big deal -- unless it is. But we don't know that, so the best course of action will be to not worry about it.

Instead, it just focuses the spotlight even more on Chandler Parsons, playing against his former team Houston on Tuesday night. It also gives Carlisle a chance to try some players at the power forward position.

My guess is that Charlie Villanueva gets the start. He's been getting a lot of praise, and he's the most natural replacement for Dirk as a big shooter. Carlisle said he'll decide tomorrow, but that he probably wouldn't go with two big men. Brandan Wright will definitely be worked in as the game goes on, however, and Al-Farouq Aminu and Eric Griffin will also see time there.
