Ivan Johnson signs contract with the Mavericks

The veteran made enough of an impression during his run at Summer League to join the Mavericks for training camp.

USA TODAY Sports

Ivan Johnson has signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks, per Mavs PR. Although terms of the deal were not disclosed, rest assured it's an unguaranteed deal and that he will join the team as part of the 20-man training camp roster.

Johnson played with the Mavericks Summer League squad and made an effort to develop his outside jump shot, spending extra time with Rick Carlisle during training camp practices. The results weren't quite there -- he only hit 4-of-21 from behind the arc -- but the Mavericks coaching staff clearly saw enough to bring him aboard as a camp body.

The move wouldn't be guaranteed because the Mavericks already have 15 players signed to guaranteed contract. However, the Mavericks' D-League squad has rights to the final three players cut from training camp, so we might see him playing for the Texas Legends this season.

If he developed his jump shot, he could bring what Rashard Lewis originally was going to bring to the table, with shooting and rebounding as a Dirk backup.

When it comes down to it, though, the Mavericks were going to pick up some players for training camp. After his Summer League experience, Johnson was a logical choice in all areas.
