Three days ago, Dirk finished an alley oop dunk for the first time in more than 4,000 days. (My rough calculation was 4,063, but leap years are weird and stuff so don't quote me on that.) This is that play, if you missed it. This is a solar eclipse. It's a cat drinking water from its bowl not the toilet. It's an enjoyable Pacers game.
As rare as this alley oop dunk is, the reaction that follows is even better. Grantland's Jason Gallagher pointed out the greatest gif of all time. Here it is.
There's a lot to digest here. Here's a wide shot.
Not enough, I say. We need to go deeper. Let's rank the reactions.
1. Dirk Nowitzki
This deserves its own gif. It's just incredible. We don't deserve Dirk Nowitzki.
2. Tim Duncan
I couldn't believe this at first, but Dirk made Tim Duncan STAND UP AND SMILE.
Dirk is the chosen one.
(Also, those two never go out of style [out of style])
3. Russell Westbrook
The MVP of the All Star Game, the king of unbridaled emotions, the high priest of a fanatical religion (#LetWestbrookBeWestbrook), could not get enough of this dunk. That's when you know it's good.
4. Steph Curry
Thoughts going through Steph's head: "Playing with Dirk is like playing with David Lee but actually fun!"
5. Pau Gasol
Pau Gasol, I should remind you, plays for the other team. DON'T THINK WE DON'T SEE THAT LITTLE SMILE, PAU.
Okay, so this was the least surprising reaction of anyone in the entire arena. Pau just wants everyone to be happy.
6. DeMarcus Cousins
This is either Boogie with his mouth open in astonishment at the play he just witnessed Dirk make, or the guy who shot JFK. Your pick.
7. Kevin Durant
Good emotion but I'm going to dock you points for the celebration. "Point at the guy who made a good play" is high school level stuff. It's the celebrating *I* still use at the rec center. Kevin, trust me, you don't want to be like me. This ain't Thunderstruck. You can do better.
8. Anthony Davis
what are you even doing anthony davis go home
