Rajon Rondo not expected back with Mavericks, per Rick Carlisle

Rondo was benched in Game 2 and left without speaking to media.

UPDATE 4:49 p.m.: Carlisle came out and straight up said it.

***

Rajon Rondo sustained a back injury in the Mavericks' 111-99 loss in Game 2 on Tuesday that will keep him out "indefinitely," according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

It doesn't take much to read into this one. Rondo may very well have a back injury, although he only played 10 minutes, so who knows when he would have suffered it. But after a second half benching and the manner in which he ignored media afterwards, it's clear he's no longer a fit for this team. As I wrote from being at the game, any fleeting dreams of Rondo in Dallas beyond this season died last night.

Rick Carlisle is scheduled to speak at 4:30 at the American Airlines Center, per a release from Mavs PR shortly before 3 p.m. The Mavericks didn't practice on Wednesday, so this is a very unusual situation. We'll have coverage of that when it happens.

Among all this, the Mavericks are supposed to defend their home court starting in Game 3 on Friday. If Devin Harris isn't ready to give it a go, they'll have to do it with J.J. Barea and Raymond Felton as the only two guards.
