NBA Mock Draft 2015 Roundup 1.0: Point guard popular for Mavericks

The Mavericks need to find a lead ball handler with Rajon Rondo headed for the exits. But quality prospects should be available at multiple positions at the 21st pick.

The conference finals might have just begun but for those fans whose teams aren't playing team into the playoffs the offseason is already underway. After the draft lottery settled the order of selections Tuesday night, a new batch of mock drafts are out.

We already had a decent idea of who might be available when the Mavericks are on the clock with the 21st pick. But the mocks illustrate which names are becoming more popular as the June 25 draft draws near.

If one of these players is successful long-term in Dallas, they'll be bucking years of history of Mavs draft picks. In the four drafts since Dallas won the title in 2011, it hasn't taken a player who played out his rookie deal in Dallas. Before that, the team decided not to pick up the fifth-year contract option for injury-plagued Rodrigue Beaubois (2009) and waived Dominique Jones (2010) in his third year. The last first round pick before Beaubois to get any serious burn in Dallas was Devin Harris (taken fifth overall in 2004).

Of course, a team has to use draft picks in order to find quality players and Dallas has a track record over the last decade of trading first round picks. In the last four years alone, the Mavericks have gone without a pick twice due to trades and traded back in the first round twice.

If the front office changes course this year, the players below are the kinds of picks they could be making.

The team has multiple needs throughout the roster but the failed Rajon Rondo trade looms large over mock drafts. Point guard is by far the most popular position in mocks and Tyus Jones is the favorite name. Right now the depth chart at the position consists of Raymond Felton, Devin Harris and J.J. Barea and with pickings slim in free agency it would be no surprise if Dallas looked for help in the draft.
