With the news of the Mavericks signing C.J. Williams on Monday, the Mavericks officially have their 20-man training camp roster. Dallas has released the full roster with Twitter handles and other basic information here.

Let’s quickly go over those 20 players, thrown into quick categories.
The starters
- Dirk Nowitzki
- Harrison Barnes
- Wesley Matthews
- Deron Williams
- Andrew Bogut
The bench
- Justin Anderson
- J.J. Barea
- Devin Harris
- Dwight Powell
- Seth Curry
- Quincy Acy
- Salah Mejri
- A.J. Hammons
That’s 13 players. With two spots remaining, here’s who I have as viable candidates to earn one of the two.
Players fighting for roster spots
- Dorian Finney-Smith
- Nicolas Brussino
- Jonathan Gibson
- Jameel Warney
And, while I wish these guys the best, here’s the ones that are unlikely to make the team.
Camp bodies
- Kyle Collinsworth
- Keith Hornsby
- C.J. Williams
There it is — 20 players, with only 15 allowed on the final roster, and only two spots realistically being open. It’s also possible the Mavericks go into the season with just 14 players under contract with plans to sign a veteran for the bench, something they really don’t have outside of Barea and Harris. There’s precedent for this — the Mavericks spent nearly the entire 2012-13 season circling different players into the 15th spot on 10-day contracts, with several of them (Troy Murphy! Eddy Curry!) getting important minutes before ultimately being let loose.
Still, those two unclaimed roster spots will make this one of the most interesting preseasons in quite some time. Last year, Salah Mejri upset Samuel Dalembert for a spot, but Mejri was injured early on and we didn’t realize that was a possibility until later. This roster battle is obvious from the get go.
