Nothing good is allowed to happen anymore. Dennis Smith Jr is hurt.

The Mavericks rookie point guard and one of the frontrunners for the Rookie of the Year award rolled up his left ankle toward the end of the first half against the Atlanta Hawks in the Mavs second-to-last preseason game on Thursday night.

Luckily for Smith and the Mavs, it didn’t appear to be a serious sprain, but a painful one nonetheless.

Smith is out for the rest of the game against the Hawks and his availability for the Mavs season and home opener next week will likely be a question mark as well. Smith was able to get up and get back on defense, play a possession and then limped off the court and into the locker room as the Mavs called a timeout. The fact that Smith didn’t need any help and walked off on his own power — however with a limp — is a good sign that Smith didn’t seriously hurt his ankle.

Stay tuned for updates after the game is over and later this week as the Mavs hope to have the number nine overall pick from the 2017 draft ready to roll against these same Hawks on Oct. 18 for the season opener.
