Thursday night, before the Dallas Mavericks took on the Los Angeles Clippers, Mavs rookie Yogi Ferrell was awarded the KIA Rookie Player of the Month Award for the Month of February.

Ferrell, who joined the team January 29 on a 10-day contract, quickly solidified his role with the Mavericks. He was immediately inserted into the starting lineup and helped the team overcome opponents such as the Spurs, Cavs, and Blazers.

In February, he averaged 12 points on 41.1 percent shooting (including 41.2 percent on three-pointers), 3.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and one steal per game. He played like a seasoned veteran and helped reignite the Mavs’ playoff hopes.

Despite bursting on the scene, Ferrell accepted the award graciously.

“For me to get this award for the first month of actually being in the NBA is something special,” Ferrell said. “I had a great month here in Dallas, and I just want to keep it going. I’m just thankful for the NBA giving me this award.”

Once the Mavs signed him, Ferrell knew that he wanted to stay put.

“I knew I just wanted to make Dallas a permanent home for myself so I just went out there with that mentality and gave it my all,” he said. “That’s all there was to it. “

If only everything was so easy.
