Last night at the inaugural NBA Awards, Dirk Nowitzki was honored as the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year award. It came as a total shock to Dirk, but everyone watching at home knows the Dallas icon is as qualified as one can be for the award.

Recently, Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Abrams asked a handful of Dirk’s former teammates for their fondest memories of the amiable superstar. You can read Abrams full story here.

Nick Van Exel, who was Dirk’s teammate from 2001-03, remembered getting voice mails on his phone. Jason Kidd, who was a Maverick from 2007-12, expanded on Dirk’s light-hearted attitude. He mentioned Dirk being a “prankster”, a “rapper” and “one of his favorite teammates”. Justin Anderson only played with Dirk from 2015-17 but recalled the time Nowitzki and his family invited Anderson and his friend to vacation with them in Mexico during the All-Star break.

Scroll through Dirk’s Twitter and notice that he doesn’t shy away from self-depreciating humor. In fact, he welcomes it. Former Mavericks David Lee and Zaza Pachulia quickly noticed Dirk’s modesty in their stories.

These players and a few more went into greater detail in their stories, so be sure to read the piece in its entirety.

Dirk truly is one of a kind, and the Mavericks franchise, city of Dallas and NBA as a whole is lucky to have him.
