The Dallas Mavericks have officially won the NBA Draft Lottery odds tiebreaker with the Atlanta Hawks. The Mavs and Hawks both finished the regular season with a record of 24-58, and the tiebreaker today was held to determine which team would have the third slot (13.8-percent chance of winning the first overall pick) or the fourth slot (13.7-percent).
Fifth and final tiebreaker: Dallas Mavericks gets the #3 pick in the draft (before the lottery), Atlanta Hawks get the #4 pick. Dallas has a 13.8 percent chance of getting the #1 pick. Atlanta has a 13.7 percent chance to get #1.

Although the odds are almost identical, the Mavs winning that third spot in the lottery guarantees that the team will pick no higher than sixth, which would be a worst-case scenario. The Hawks, on the other hand, have a very small chance of getting the seventh pick as their worst-case scenario. Given that the Mavs were projected to be in the 8-10 slots all throughout this season, it’s almost a miracle that the franchise is going to be in this good of a position.
On paper, this comes off as a minor accomplishment, but this little bit of luck could pay huge dividends for the franchise going forward if things continue to go their way.
