The ESPN NBA Insider dropped another clue about the Mavericks’ attempts to snag Luka Dončić.

UPDATE: Immediately after publishing Woj tweeted this out, providing clarity on his earlier SportCenter spot.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Dallas Mavericks are interested in trading up for the third pick. This information came in a discussion about available point guards, specifically related to Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks:

“If Atlanta moves down from number 3, Dallas has been targeting that third pick. If Atlanta moves down, Trae Young would be a target”

This specific piece of information follows yesterday’s report that the Mavericks have Luka Dončić targeted in Thursday’s draft. It’s important to note that 247 Sports’ Mike Fisher reported later last night that “targeting” might be too strong a verb according to his source.

If accurate, this news gives us two pieces of information. First, it points to one team the Mavericks are potentially working on a trade with in Atlanta. Second, there’s now a distinct reason why Atlanta might be interested in trading back for Trae Young.

It’s been rumored since the end of the regular season that the Hawks were looking to begin their rebuild in earnest. Dennis Schoder and his three year $46 million contract is apparently on the trade block. Kent Bazemore has two years and $37 million remaining. Miles Plumlee is owed $25 million over the next two seasons.

If Atlanta is truly invested in a rebuild, they may be interested in acquiring as many future picks as possible. Is Dallas willing to head down that route to acquire Dončić if he’s there at three?

Of course, it’s important to remember why Dončić is so high on the draft boards of smart teams, as he put his team up six in a crucial moment with this absolutely bananas shot:

A nineteen year old with this kind of shot making ability is nothing to scoff at. Whether or not he’s worth trading up for is something only time will tell.
