Having traded up to take Luka Doncic, the Dallas Mavericks add another terrific passer and playmaker in Jalen Brunson, selected with the 33rd pick overall in the second round.
Brunson capped off a fantastic college career at Villanova with a second national championship just a few months ago, and averaged close to 19 points and 5 assists per game as a junior. Brunson’s calling card is his shooting, having made over 39 percent of his triples in his three years at Villanova. He’s also a competent initiator who ran a great spread pick and roll system at Villanova under Jay Wright.
It’s a little surprising perhaps that Brunson was the pick for Dallas, if only because the team already has a bunch of point guards on the roster and just took a 6’8 point-forward in Luka Doncic. This may signal that Yogi Ferrell is not going to be retained by the team. Seth Curry is also a free agent.
