The Mavericks didn’t have good draft lottery luck again, but this time it’s OK

New, comments

Dallas once again failed to move up in the lottery, but finally it doesn’t sting as much.

When I saw the Mavericks card get held up this time last year, getting announced as having the fifth pick in the draft, I threw our remote hard at the ground. It didn’t break, but I wanted it to.

That was one of the rare times I had gotten legitimately mad about the Mavericks since 2011, when I started at Mavs Moneyball. It was nice, in an odd way. I still felt feelings. Nasty feelings, but feelings nonetheless.

When I saw the Hawks icon flash on the TV screen at the number 10 spot, meaning the Mavericks were conveying the pick from the Luka Doncic trade, I finished slurping up the tortellini my wife made for dinner and kinda shrugged.

That’s the difference Luka Doncic makes.

Make no mistake — Zion would have been incredible. A perfect forward to fit between Luka and Kristaps Porzingis. But Zion was always a miraculous pipe dream. Luka and Porzingis are real, a comforting blanket to tuck us in at night.

So really, who cares. The Mavericks are going to roll out the reigning Rookie of the Year and a 23-year-old big who has made an All-Star game already in October. Who knows how great Dallas will be when the real games tip off in a few months, but with mounds of cap space, there’s a decent chance the Mavericks will be fun and competitive.

If you get sad at all, remember when Luka did this?

Or this?

How about all these?

What about when this guy last played?

The Mavericks are going to be OK.
