On Tuesday’s edition of “The Jump” on ESPN, Brian Windhorst made it clear that he expects the Dallas Mavericks to be the frontrunner in the race of acquiring two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The move would happen in the free agency period of 2021, when Antetokounmpo will become an unrestricted free agent. Here’s what Windhorst said on the air:
“The Dallas Mavericks are gonna be at the head of the line in pursuing Giannis. They want to have a 3rd star,” said Windhorst. “They want to keep their books clear for 2021, I wouldn’t expect them to add any major free agents this year. They’re going to wait.”
The quote adds to the multitude of preexisting rumors and speculation that Dallas will be a contender for Antetokoumpo. The incumbent MVP has made comments suggesting that he’ll stay in Milwaukee, although no progress has been reported towards the supermax contract extension he’s eligible for this offseason.
Things are destined to get interesting during free agency of 2021 where the Mavericks will have the cap space to pursue Antetokoumpo.
