We’re going to look back at the unsung wins of the Mavericks 2011 championship run

Fox Sports Southwest is re-airing all 16 of the Mavericks playoff victories from 2011 but we’re going to look at the under-the-radar wins.

If you haven’t heard, Fox Sports Southwest is doing a pretty cool thing where they are replaying every victory from the Mavericks 2011 playoff run. It’s a good opportunity to go down memory lane at a time where there really isn’t anything else better to do and we could all use a pick-me-up.

When going over the schedule and talking with our staff about how we should cover this, I thought about approaching these games in a different way — what if instead of writing about the games we’ve read about countless times and digested hundreds of highlights, we instead looked at those wins that we obviously crucial, but maybe aren’t as seared into our brains like the others.

We can replay the images of Games 2 and 6 against Miami, Game 4 against Los Angeles or Games 4 and 5 against the Thunder in our sleep at this point. Those all featured memorable comebacks, clutch shots or eye-popping performances. We know those games so well, I thought, why not write the games that we maybe don’t remember as fondly.

So with that, I’ve decided to pick a win from each series during this replay over the next month and write about them, Morning After style with a fresh pair of eyes and brain cells (sort of).

Here are the games I’ve picked and when they’ll be broadcast if you’d like to follow along. We’ll post the morning after the game is aired and potentially me and Kirk will hop on a podcast to supplement.

  • First Round: Game 5 against Portland, April 25 at 5 p.m. CST
  • Western Conference Semi-Finals: Game 2 against Los Angeles, April 28, 9 p.m. CST
  • Western Conference Finals: Game 3 against Oklahoma City, May 4, 9 p.m. CST
  • NBA Finals: Game 4 against Miami, May 10, 9 p.m.

Now look, every playoff win of a title run is memorable to some degree no matter what. This isn’t meant to say these wins weren’t great or anything. If you want to yell at me in the comments about how fondly you remember those wins, be my guest. I just know when you see Mavericks highlight packages from that win and for the rest of time, which games are getting the chopping block? Which ones might be fuzzy right now or five years from now? That’s what I was thinking and that’s what I wanted to do.

So let’s have some fun and enjoy living in the past for the next month. See you then.
