A few months ago, our Managing Editor, Rebecca Lawson, shared this piece announcing that California Assembly Bill 5 would possibly end her employment with SB Nation, thus ending her tenure in charge of Mavs Moneyball. She’s a Mavericks fan based in California and Vox Media made the decision to move on from all contractors in that state as a result of the impending law.
As of earlier this week, long time writer Josh Bowe and I have been promoted by SB Nation to run Mavs Moneyball: I am now Managing Editor with Josh as Deputy Editor. He and I will be running this site together. While we’re still frustrated by the law and the ensuing decisions which led to this point, both he and I, along with our staff, look forward to providing you with coverage and analysis of the Dallas Mavericks.
Though he and I have been Maverick fans most of our lives, both of us joined Mavs Moneyball after Dallas finally reached the mountaintop in 2011. Josh joined the site in June of 2011, meaning he’s getting close to a decade of contributions to the community. I joined Mavs Moneyball in fall of 2012, while also trying to contribute at the now defunct Two Man Game, then Mavs Outsider Report.
Josh brings his background as a trained journalist paired with an outstanding analytical mind. In my opinion, he’s one of the best writers in Mavericks media. I’m an organizer and planner and spend way too much time online. Together, we hope to continue to bring you coverage you enjoy.
We’re so very grateful for Rebecca’s contributions over the years. Though you did not see as much writing from her the last few years, her behind the scenes work helped keep us on track. Following in Tim Cato’s footsteps (and before him, LJ Tynan), Rebecca pushed our fan blog to become something more. We’ve always produced great content for as long as I’ve read and been a part of Mavs Moneyball, but we were not always as organized. The sports internet in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s was a different place, and staying competitive in a crowded Maverick blog market place meant doing things differently and Rebecca’s been key in our team adapting and applying modern content making practices.
In the ensuing weeks (hopefully not months) coverage will be difficult with the lack of certainty as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. We’re all fans and sports coverage is a hobby and this ordeal has made everything more difficult. But I know our staff and part of being a Mavs Moneyball contributor means doing the job as best we can. Our site has a great staff and we write for a wonderful community of Maverick fans.
Josh, Doyle, Jordan, Sam, Kevin, Matt, Dan, Lauren, Mike, and myself look forward to writing, podcasting, commenting, and more with you as the Mavericks continue to build a title contender with Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, and Rick Carlisle.
