A 2021 free agency primer from Mavs Moneyball

Just so we’re all on the same page

When I took over the reigns of Mavs Moneyball in March of 2020, the world was fairly normal, all things considered. By the end of the month, everything was different and we were simply trying to make it through. Then the season resumed, Dallas played a wild series against the Clippers, and we had a truncated off-season headed into the 2020-21 season.

Fast-forward to now, following a 72 game season crammed into as little of time as possible and now a playoffs structured to finish before the Olympics. This season, we’re getting a slightly more on-schedule free agency. Right smack in the middle of the Olympics (which will feature Luka Doncic), the NBA will open free agency on August 2nd.

So understanding we have just under a month until things become official with any free agents, that means we have that much time to obsess over rumors and talk about any and all free agents on the market.

It’s that last part I’ve emphasized with our staff. So often, we’re tasked mainly with writing about what players do while in other uniforms and this is the one time of year we can envision them in a Dallas one and what that might mean. Over the next month, you’re going to see free agent profiles of all kinds on various players. In some instances you might see multiple profiles of the same player from different points of view.

None of us here have sources, so it’s pure speculation and wish fulfillment (though once interest in players starts getting reported, that will play into what we write). To our hardcore regular readers, this sort of thing might get annoying but honestly there’s not much to talk about until the Olympics start. We might as well have some fun.

With all that in mind, leave a comment on who you’d like to see us cover. With more than 15 regular writers contributing to the site, you might just get an article on the fringe free agent you’ve been hoping for.
