We’re having fun here, no?
During a first-half timeout of last Sunday’s 129-113 loss to the Sacramento Kings, the Dallas Mavericks debuted this little gem on the jumbotron, making light of all the preseason and early-season discussion around star guard Luka Dončić and his conditioning.
It’s called “Body By Luka,” and it’s not lost on us that it was unveiled during one of Luka’s undershirt games, a look that gives more “pickup game assassin” vibes than it does “generational NBA talent” vibes.
“Some say I’m in the best shape ever,” Dončić says at to open the video. “And they’re right, and you can be too. Thanks to Body by Luka!”
An 80s-inspired montage of his teammates doing squats and aerobics in orange and purple headbands ensues. It’s a cheeky, self-deprecating bit that pokes fun at all the hand-wringing in NBA circles surrounding Luka’s conditioning and unique, deliberate style of play. His teammates really get into the bit, and it’s quite funny. And if you haven’t been to a game recently, you may not have had a chance to see it.
Dončić came into this year in tip-top shape, as opposed to a couple of his first NBA seasons, and is currently putting up MVP numbers. He’s averaging 30.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game this year. He’s also been crafty on defense, averaging 1.2 steals per game. “Body by Luka” seems to be working out pretty well so far this year for the Mavericks.
