Quote board: Mavs talk fourth quarter collapse to the Cavs

“We played bad. We missed a lot of good shots — that was on me in the fourth quarter.”

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers at Dallas Mavericks Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Mavericks looked like they had the Cleveland Cavaliers on the ropes, bit it was the Cavs who had the last laugh Wednesday night. Cleveland came back from a 20-point deficit in the first half to take the lead late in the fourth quarter and hold on for a 113-110 win over Dallas. It was an ugly loss for the Mavs as they shot poorly and saw the Cavaliers dominate them on the glass.

Here’s what the Mavericks and Cavaliers had to say after the game:

Luka Doncic

(On what happened in the fourth quarter when the offense slowed down…)

“We played bad. We missed a lot of good shots — that was on me in the fourth quarter.”

(On Mavericks Guard Seth Curry’s play tonight…)

“It was really good. He got shots up, and we all know he is going to make them, so I try to find him.”

(On what the Mavs were doing right when they built a 20-point lead…)

“Just rebounding the ball. I think the rebounds were a big issue today.”

(On Mavericks Center Dereck Lively II’s play…)

He has been great. We just got to keep working.”

(On lessons learned from this game…)

“We’ve got to rebound the ball better.”

Dante Exum

(On losing the lead in the fourth quarter…)

“I think, you know, you could say it was a lot of things. But I just think we need to close out games. It is as simple as that. I think we were up nine [points] with about seven minutes to go [and] we just let our foot off the gas. That is when we need to shut teams down and bury it.”

(On how to adapt when shots are not going down…)

“I think we’ve got to double down on the defensive end. I think they got too many easy shots in the lane. We knew they were shooters. We knew they were going to turn into an offensive team with the guys they have out [of the game].”

(On what Cavaliers guard Caris LeVert was doing to be so successful tonight…)

“He was a driver, and he was getting to the lane and making shots. Hats off to him.”

Seth Curry

(On how he felt tonight with a new season-high 19 points…)

“It felt good, got some good looks and got a chance to push the ball up the floor and make some plays. I played some long stretches. It felt good to get out there and get my feet wet.”

(On what happened during the 15-0 Cleveland run in the fourth quarter...)

“It was kind of a whirlwind. We missed some looks and let that affect our defense a little bit. The momentum just shifted. It felt like momentum was a real thing tonight in the second half. We couldn’t do anything on the offensive end. They were coming down and getting what they wanted offensively. Their plays were working. They were knocking down the shots. We let them back in the game, and then once it was a close game, anything can happen. We didn’t finish it the right way.”

Jason Kidd

(On what went wrong for the Mavericks offensively in the fourth quarter...)

“We got good looks; we just didn’t make them. We got some really good looks. Luka [Dončić] had looks. [Seth] Curry had looks. Everybody had good looks — they just didn’t go down for us. You look at our defense, again, we talked before the game about how we’ve got to rebound the ball. You look at [Jarrett] Allen, he’s going to come. Nine offensive rebounds — that will just put you in harm’s way. Give them credit, they played hard, and they were the better team.”

(On the Mavericks building a 20-point first-half lead...)

“You look at what Luka [Dončić] was doing. He was getting to the basket, and he was making his 3. Again, give them credit, they kind of took everybody else away and let him score. With that being said, we’ve got to be able to knock down shots, but we’ve got to be able to get stops. At the end, we just didn’t get a good look — the look that we wanted. We’ve got to be better late in the game.”

(On the play of Mavericks guard Seth Curry off the bench...)

“He was great. He was great from when he checked in. He got us going from the 3-point line. He was pretty much the one that was making the 3s tonight; he made 5 of them, I think. Just looking at when his name was called, he was ready. Again, in that fourth quarter for us to only score 20 points, we were better than that.”

(On what was supposed to happen on the game’s final play...)

“We just missed a screen for Luka [Dončić]. That happens. We’ve got to get better at it.”

(On what Mavericks center Dereck Lively II can learn from Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen...)

“[He can learn] A lot. A lot from the first play of the game. You’ve got to be ready. Everybody can talk about how well you’re playing but you’ve got to understand who you’re playing against. The first play of the game went to [Jarrett] Allen and he got a foul. Just understanding Allen’s an all-star and he plays at a high level. This is a game he (Lively) can learn from.”

Jarrett Allen

(On if they had a mismatch on the boards since the Cavaliers outrebounded the Mavericks by 20 rebounds…)

“Not necessarily. Honestly, I’m a big fan of Dereck Lively II. I keep up with him as a rookie. He’s been excellent this year at getting rebounds and positioning. So, [it was] not necessarily a mismatch. I just feel like he didn’t have the best game for himself tonight.”

(On what was most important for him to combat the Mavericks’ decision to go small…)

“Attack the offensive boards. Height is a big advantage on the offensive boards. I think there was one possession where we had five in a row or something. We all were attacking so we just took advantage of that and tried to get extra shots.”

(On his advice to Mavericks center Dereck Lively II as a big man finding his way through the NBA…)

“For me, growing up in my rookie year, just watch a lot of film of the guys that have been in your position and try to take things from everybody ahead of you. He’s lucky to be able to play with Luka [Dončić], to be able to get a lot of reps, a lot of shots, because people are going to collapse on him. And don’t get down on yourself. You’re going to have a long career in this league and enjoy every step of the way.”

Caris Levert

(On if they read the screen on the final play to get the ball out of Luka’s hands…)

“Yeah, we obviously knew that Luka thrives in those types of moments. We tried to make it tough for him. J [Jarrett Allen] did a great job of trapping him, and then Max [Strus] did a great job of contesting that Seth Curry jump shot.”

J.B. Bickerstaff

(On what it took to get the comeback win tonight…)

“Guts, plain and simple. It was the ability to dig down and go somewhere when things weren’t going your way. We were struggling defensively in the first half, but collectively we went out and just found a way. You don’t do that without heart, courage, and fortitude.”

(On how the Cavaliers were able to get the win with a couple of their key players out…)

“They’re committed to each other. I think that’s been the fun part. They just don’t want to let each other down. They don’t want to disappoint one another, and they love to compete. There’s a fire burning in them when they’re out there competing because they know the next guy next to them is competing at that same level. So, it’s like one guy just feeds off the other guy and the next thing you know, a spark turns into a flame. You look out and there’s a collective union of dudes that are just getting after it.”
