Half court shots and heartfelt dreams

Imagine everything you’ve ever wanted. Imagine all of your dreams coming true at once. Now imagine doing all of this with Dirk by your side. This is the experience that this Mavs fan had in last night’s Dallas Mavericks loss to the San Antonio Spurs when Courtney won a 65” 4K television. Assuming she was dreaming of an amazing TV, of course.

Okay so maybe all of Courtney’s dreams didn’t come true at once, but this will be one of the coolest experiences she’ll ever have after hitting a half court shot in front of the American Airlines Center and then celebrating with the likes of Dirk Nowitzki, J.J. Barea, Wesley Matthews and Devin Harris.

There isn’t much to celebrate for us Mavs fans at this point in this season, but moments like this really give us something to cheer about.

We can’t all live the high life like Courtney did last night, but there’s one thing she taught us that’s for sure: dreams can come true, yes they do.

Dallas managed to play the young guys and lose!

Dallas drops game #79 of the season, losing at home to the Spurs to put their record at 15 games under .500, and 32-47 overall. Dwight Powell led the Mavs with a team-high 12 points, which brings us too...

The stealth rest

With most of San Antonio’s regular rotation sitting out, the Dallas Mavericks opened up a double-digit lead against the Spurs in the first half. Then for the second half, they pulled out four of five starters and six of their top rotation guys. The result was predictable, and immediate. An 8(!) point third quarter turned the game on its head, and San Antonio cruised the rest of the way. Bryn (not Gary) Forbes decided to have a career night, pouring in 27 points to lead all scorers. He and Davis Bertans hit all nine of the Spurs’ threes, one more than the Mavs could muster as a team.

A pair of Mavs narrowly miss double-doubles

J.J. Barea and Nerlens Noel played 25 minutes combined, but both nearly recorded double-doubles. J.J. had 8 points and 8 assists in 11 minutes, and Noel had 8 points and 9 rebounds in 14 minutes. Nerlens led all Mavs at +9, and was his usual active self. Meanwhile, Barea put on a show early with his passing, and is so far and away the best playmaker on this team, it’s not even funny (maybe it’s a little funny).

West lottery rivals continue to lose

At one point, both New Orleans (facing Denver) and Minnesota (facing Utah) had leads, but it appears both will lose Friday night, meaning Dallas gains no ground in lottery positioning. Chances are still very good that they’ll get a top-ten pick (probably ninth), but with seventh in striking distance, Dallas will need a little luck to assure their best odds. They’ll take on the Phoenix Suns -- losers of 13 straight -- on Sunday.

The Battle of the B Teams

WHO: Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs

WHAT: A lot of players you’ve never heard of on both sides.

WHERE: American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX

WHEN: 7:30 p.m. CT

HOW: TXA21 or NBA League Pass

THE STORY: This morning, Rick Carlisle finally (officially) flew the proverbial white flag by announcing that for the rest of the season, the vets will play limited minutes while the younger guys will get an extended look. This isn’t really that surprising, of course: with no playoffs on the line, there’s no reason to risk Dirk’s nagging Achilles or Seth’s nagging shoulder or any other possible injuries to any other player.

The Spurs, of course, have already clinched and are resting guys for a much different reason. So, for tonight’s 9,345th edition of MAVS SPURS, we’ll see a lot of uniforms we don’t recognize, and a lot of random talent evaluation. Maybe we’ll see some more Dirk with a whiteboard. TUNE IN TO FIND OUT!

Go Spurs go. (Am I doing this right?)

The DNP-Rest Bowl

Dallas plays San Antonio in game 78 of the season that’s still going on. That’s not a complaint, FYI. Basketball is still basketball! Will it be good basketball, though?

Everybody is sitting this one out

No, not everyone, but the Spurs are sitting six players for Friday night’s game in Dallas. I don’t have much information as of this writing about who will -- or won’t — play for the Mavs. Seth Curry has missed the last three games with a shoulder injury. Dirk missed Tuesday’s loss to the Kings with an Achilles issue. It might already be a broken record to hear, but with the playoffs officially out of reach, resting veterans in favor of getting a look at younger players is very much an option here.

Yogi Ferrell getting good reps

With Curry out, Yogi Ferrell has stepped back into a starting role. For an undrafted rookie point guard who joined the team mid-season, Yogi has continued to work hard and learn on the fly. He has stayed afloat in the deep end, to throw another cliche at you.

Dallas will have opportunities to upgrade the point guard position in the offseason, but for Yogi the only thing that matters is getting time on the floor now. It will be interesting to see how much better he can get with a full offseason and training camp.

Barnes trying to finish the season strong

Barnes is wrapping up a season where he’s played more (in the regular season) than ever before, while being asked to do way more than ever before, too. Carlisle has hinted that Barnes might get a rest game at some point — even at just 24 — given his workload. If he sits, expect Nicolas Brussino to get a lot of extra minutes, along with Dorian Finney-Smith. Brussino’s passing stands out against some of the other forwards on the team, but he’s obviously still a bit of an unknown overall.

How to watch

Tip-off starts at 8:30 Eastern Time, 7:30 Central, on KTXA. Enjoy!
