At media day, we asked Mavericks about some dumb things. They loved it.

You need to understand something about Mavericks Media Day. Players go station to station, doing super serious interviews with television stations or sitting still for minutes at a time as NBA 2K maps their face for their most recent game. Media day gets hyped up because of the pictures and pull quotes, but they're actually the equivalent to the syllabus day at the beginning of a new semester.

Here at Mavs Moneyball we're concerned with one thing above all: fun. So we asked a handful of players the truly tough questions that the rest of the media is afraid to address. The hot dog, and its controversial standing as a sandwich, is a pivotal question facing today's society. I think these interviews will help us inch closer to a consensus.

I never predicted Devin Harris being the guy who got into this question the most, but here we are. Hopefully you enjoy this as much as they did.

I (Tim) asked the questions and filmed the video. Austin Ngaruiya edited the video and did a fantastic job, so let's give a huge shoutout to him.

Dallas' annual scrimmage open to the fans took place on Sunday despite most of the Mavericks' starting five not suiting up.

... and we're back.

Today, the Mavericks faced the Mavericks on the floor of the American Airlines Center in their annual Fan Jam scrimmage. The Blue Team beat the White Team 42-32, although four out of the Mavericks' first starters didn't play.

In total, six Mavericks sat out: Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons, Wesley Matthews, Deron Williams, Dwight Powell and JaVale McGee. Dirk's workload leading up to the season will be miniscule, explaining his absence. (It's worth noting, though, that Dirk did play in last year's scrimmage.) Williams and Powell both should be cleared for contact in the coming week or two while Parsons and Matthews are both working to be ready on the Mavericks' opening day on Oct. 28.

Interestingly, Matthews participated in most of the Mavericks' pre-scrimmage warm-up exercises, including a full-court shooting drill that involved running and shooting, while Parsons sat them out. It was certainly a smaller and less star-studded scrimmage than most fans would have hoped, but the free event still gave a taste for the coming season.

Here's how the teams were broken down.

Here's the fan jam rosters pic.twitter.com/CnhSbtDOgb

Rick Carlisle hopped on the mic before the scrimmage for a bit of banter, mostly focused on making fun of Parsons. He called him "gorgeous" and "The Beautiful One" before asking if his post-game suits were going to get even tighter this season. Parsons emphatically said yes, but that's obvious bogus, since men's fashion is trending slightly baggier this year and Parsons rarely wears suits after games anyway.

Dirk and Deron Williams got the biggest ovations.

The scrimmage was fine. I can't even pretend like there's much of anything we can learn from it, so let me just mention a few interesting things I noticed.

Jeremy Evans took two three-pointers, making one. While Evans never shot threes in Utah, Rick Carlisle has said he has played at small forward throughout training camp (in addition to the four and the five). For Evans to do that during a game, he would really need to stretch the floor.

Justin Anderson showed great vision picking up Evans behind the defense for a quick alley oop. I'd love to see that duo get at it this season.

John Jenkins had a couple of smart drives to the rim. I'm iffy on him having a role after seeing Dahntay Jones and Wayne Ellington wither away on the bench, but early on, the Mavericks may not have another option. I think he'll do well with those minutes.

The Mavericks ran an elevator play for Jamil Wilson, which is the funniest sentence I think I'll type today.

Charlie Villanueva easily took the most shots. Not sure if he finished with the most points, though.

After the game, I think the Mavericks broke the record for the longest game of knockout ever. I definitely didn't stay for it. Sorry, I'm a bad journalist, please don't judge me too harshly.

Chandler has harsh words towards a team that never treated him with respect.

During Suns media day former Dallas Maverick Tyson Chandler was asked his thoughts on his former team pursuing Los Angeles Clipper DeAndre Jordan.

This whole saga is like a scab that keeps getting torn off. It won't end. We all knew Tyson Chandler wasn't happy that the Mavericks didn't bother to make a cursory offer. That Dallas brazenly pursued Jordan before free agency had even started (remember Dez Bryant making the pitch during Dirk Nowitzki's Celebrity Baseball Game?) was not in good taste, in hindsight.

Tyson Chandler doesn't bother to hide his disdain here and he shouldn't. He's the best center in recent Dallas Mavericks history and it's not close. Mark Cuban massively miscalculated twice, letting Tyson walk after 2011 and again this past summer.

As much as we'd all like to move on from missing out on DeAndre Jordan, the decision by Maverick management is going to have ramifications throughout this season and beyond. This Tyson video is just another instance of reopening an old wound.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle indicated the team could give young players a shot at backup wing positions.

The Mavericks are pretty thin at the wing behind the rehabbing Chandler Parsons and Wes Matthews but the team doesn't appear to be looking at adding another veteran player right now. Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle provided a little insight into the thinking on the issue in his comments during media day Monday.

Parsons may be ready for the season opener Oct. 28 and Carlisle indicated Matthews probably won't make his first appearance for Dallas until after Christmas. That probably means big minutes for rookie small forward Justin Anderson and heavy doses of small ball lineups with Devin Harris and J.J. Barea at shooting guard.

But the Mavs coach sounded high on shooting guard John Jenkins, a fourth-year player the team signed on a bargain deal this summer. The former first round pick washed out after three years in Atlanta but has showed potential as an elite shooter and has decent size for an off-guard. As Carlisle said,

Jenkins has been a guy that's been pretty impressive since we signed him this summer. I was with him at (Tim) Grgurich's camp. Was very impressed with how he shot the ball. He's gotten stronger, quicker. He's a competitor.

Carlisle suggested his preference was to go young at the wing after Richard Jefferson, Parsons' backup last season, left for Cleveland over the summer. Surprisingly, he said Maurice Ndour, an undrafted free agent the Mavs added on a partially guaranteed deal, could spend time at both forward positions.

Ndour, you guys are going to see him a lot early in preseason. I know Parsons won't be playing early preseason games. He'll (Ndour) be playing some three and some four. And he's a very intriguing prospect. High energy, his skill development is really on the come. And he's got the kind of body you like. He's got length. He can run, he can finish, he can shoot.

Most observers that saw him in summer league described Ndour as a prospect at power forward or center. He's got some of the same abilities as Al-Farouq Aminu but his range doesn't extend far beyond the painted area. Ndour, one of 20 guys heading to training camp with the Mavs, will also have to beat out someone getting more guaranteed money to be on the regular season roster.

The team added another athletic forward, Jeremy Evans, over the offseason but Carlisle's media day quotes confirmed the idea he would probably spend more time at center than on the perimeter.

There are a few veteran options available at small forward still available if Dallas was so inclined. Philadelphia waived former All-Star small forward Gerald Wallace over the weekend and Portland reached an agreement on a buy-out with forward Mike Miller Sunday. But neither is an ideal fit for the Mavs. Wallace has never been much of a threat shooting from outside and Miller can't really defend the perimeter at age 35. Either player would probably be a better fit at power forward, where Dallas is already stacked.

It's a big surprising that the team didn't make a play for small forward Dorell Wright after Jefferson bolted for Cleveland. Wright, an 11-year veteran, is still only 29 years old and shot 38 percent from the three point line in 2014-2015. He seemed to fit the same kind of profile as Jefferson when he joined the team last year but apparently hadn't received any serious offers. Wright was set to go to training camp with the Heat, the team that originally drafted him, before announcing last month he was signing with the Chongqing Dragons.

If the Mavs are in the market for small forward depth around February or March when the CBA season ends, Wright could still be an option. But for now it looks like the team is prepared to lean on either unproven players or smaller, quicker lineups.

Parsons is closer to being cleared to play than Matthews, who could be out past Christmas.

The Mavericks will be missing at least one starter when the season begins on Oct. 28, with head coach Rick Carlisle confirming at Mavericks media day that summer acquisition Wesley Matthews won't be ready by opening night.

Chandler Parsons, who underwent surgery on May 1 to repair cartilage damage, could make the season opener, although his status is still up in the air. His rehab will have him back sooner than Matthews, though.

"My hope and my goal is to be ready when we play Phoenix (in the season opener)," Parsons said. "Obviously, I can't make any promises. From the day I had the surgery, it's what I've wanted to do. Missing the playoffs last year against Houston was frustrating. But my hope is to come back and be ready for the Suns game."

Until it was reported Sunday, the exact details of Parsons' surgery had not been revealed. His surgery was a minor, hybrid microfracture surgery on a non-weight-bearing part of his knee, which dramatically lessened the recovery time of a true microfracture procedure.

"I would say there's a chance that Parsons plays in the opener from my understanding," Carlisle said. "By NBA standards, we're light years from knowing if that's a real possibility or not."

Matthews' timetable is more nebulous. Matthews tore his Achilles with the Trail Blazers last March and has been recovering ever since. Even though he told Mavs Moneyball he would be ready for the season opener, it's been unlikely that he would make that initial game, given the nature of his injury. We spoke with a doctor who treats Achilles in July who explained what exactly Matthews is going through.

"Wes is going to take a little longer," Carlisle said. "He's not going to want to tell you that and we're going to have to fight to keep him off the court, but we've got to make sure we do this the right way and that he's really 100 percent healthy before getting in."

As for a timeline? Say, Christmas?

"I'd say there's a possibility -- I'd say it's a definite maybe," Carlisle said, drawing a few laughs. "It could be sooner. It's hard to say. He was cleared for an increase in activity a week ago. His court activity has been ramped up some. He will participate in certain aspects of training camp but nothing live to start off."

Matthews, for his part, continues to say his goal is to be ready by opening day, even if that's unrealistic.

"I'm trying to be ready by opening day," Matthews said. "Whether I can play in it or not, I can't really control that. But my goal is to ready and available opening day."

As for his current workload, Matthews described it as this: "Everything but contact. I'm obviously not at 100 percent full throttle sprints. But I'm jumping and running and ball-handling and shooting. A lot of stuff other than contact."

Parsons talked about his workload, too, saying that he is running on the treadmill and dunked for the first time last week.

"I'm like a kid in a candy shop every time they tell me I can do things," Parsons said. "First it was a layup while slapping glass and I was so happy. Then jump shots and yeah, I dunked last week for the first time (since the surgery). Like I said, it's been frustrating, it's been annoying, but at the end of the day it'll be good."

Parsons said when he first went in, his recovery time was going to be a lot longer before it was discovered that only minor surgery would be needed.

Evans has some Brandan Wright in him, something Carlisle pointed out at media day.

If you haven't followed his career, it's easy to assume that new Maverick 6'9 forward Jeremy Evans fits the mold of a traditional wing player. He certainly has the frame for it. However, you won't find him lingering on the perimeter. Evans has made a name for himself working close to and above the rim, even netting a dunk contest title in 2012.

In a traditional sense, Evans is a power forward. Last season with the Utah Jazz, he played 68.7 percent of his minutes at the 4. Coming into this season, it was easy to assume that he could split time with Charlie Villanueva backing up Dirk Nowitzki. However, head coach Rick Carlisle also has plans to play him at center occasionally.

Carlisle confirms my thinking on Jeremy Evans. "I think he can play a little (center) for us, he's a Brandan Wright-type athlete."

Center isn't an unnatural fit for Evans. Other than power forward, it's the only position he played for the Jazz last season. And the comparison to Brandan Wright isn't as far off as it may seem.

While Evans likely won't match the insane efficiency of Wright, he scores well inside. Last season, he connected on 77.8 percent of his shots inside the restricted area, taking most of his shots inside the circle. He's also great at the pick and roll.

If Carlisle is willing to play Evans more at the 5, it signals a move towards a smaller, more athletic lineup at times a la the Golden State Warriors. However, it's probably just a reaction to the reality of the personnel making up the roster. Whatever the case, Evans' athleticism should be one of the highlights off the bench.
